Bitter, neutral, non-toxic. Processing methods are the same as those for *Ruxiang* (Olibanum / Frankincense).
[Invention] *Ruxiang* (Olibanum) invigorates blood circulation, while *Moyao* (Myrrha) disperses blood stasis; both can alleviate pain, reduce swelling, and promote tissue regeneration. Therefore, these two herbs are often used in combination. For injuries caused by blades, blows, or falls from horses, they should be taken with warm wine. They are contraindicated for pregnant women with unstable fetal qi. After childbirth, if there is excessive lochia discharge accompanied by abdominal deficiency pain, or if pain persists after an abscess has ulcerated, or for various pains in the tendons, bones, chest, and abdomen not caused by blood stasis, they must not be administered.
This refers to *Xuejie* (Dragon's Blood).
Sweet, salty, neutral, non-toxic. It is genuine if it penetrates the fingernail when tested, and of superior quality if it does not crumble like wax when chewed. *Caoxuejie* (Plant Dragon's Blood) is purple in color and inferior to *Gua Xuejie* (True Dragon's Blood).
[Invention] *Xuejie* (Dragon's Blood) is the resinous exudate of trees, analogous to human essence and blood. It is a crucial herb for alleviating pain, harmonizing blood, contracting wound margins, and resolving stasis while generating new tissue. It treats all types of pain from fractures, contusions, and injuries, as well as stabbing sensations caused by chaotic blood and qi, and internal injuries involving blood accumulation; it should be taken with wine. Although *Ruxiang* (Olibanum) and *Moyao* (Myrrha) primarily address blood disorders but also enter the qi level, this herb specifically targets the blood level of the Liver Meridian. However, its action is most urgent yet capable of drawing out pus, so it should not be taken in large doses. When used with yang-tonifying herbs alongside *Ruxiang* and *Moyao*, it is employed to harmonize blood and qi without causing stagnation or toxic accumulation.
Pungent, bitter, slightly sweet, neutral, non-toxic. Originates from the Western Regions, the South Sea, and Persia. It is a resin from trees, resembling glue or malt syrup. Currently, it is available in Annan, Srivijaya, and other foreign lands. The variety resembling malt syrup is called *Anxi Xiang* (Benzoin). The variety where purple, black, and yellow colors mix like agate, turning white when ground, is of superior quality. The coarse, black variety containing sand, stones, and tree bark is secondary, formed from dregs. The variety consisting of flakes that do not form blocks is inferior, possibly mixed with other fragrances. The genuine product attracts mice when burned. Processing strictly avoids exposure to fire.
[Invention] *Anxi Xiang* (Benzoin) was an item presented as tribute by foreign nations. Its fragrance is aromatic but not drying, and its penetrating nature is strong but not harsh. Burning it expels evil spirits and invites divine presence, clarifying the mind. Ingestion wards off evil and eliminates malignancy, promoting smooth flow, clearing pathogenic qi from the heart and abdomen, repelling foul gu poison, regulating cholera-like disorders, and stopping sudden cardiac pain, vomiting, and regurgitation. It treats women possessed by evil influences or engaging in nocturnal intercourse with ghosts; burning the smoke to fumigate the *Dantian* acupoint can permanently sever these connections. Therefore, it is commonly used for *Chuan Shi Lao Zhai* (Consumptive Disease due to Infectious Pathogens). It is used in *Suhe Xiang Wan* (Styrax Pill) and *Zixue Dan* (Purple Snow Pellet), each possessing miraculous powers to reverse critical conditions, truly incomparable to ordinary prescriptions. It is strictly contraindicated for individuals with qi deficiency and poor appetite, or yin deficiency with excessive fire, as it consumes qi.
