It is also known as Baihehua (White Crane Flower).
Bitter, acrid, warm in nature, and toxic.
[Invention/Commentary] Yuzhan Gen (Rhizoma Hostae) can penetrate deep into the bones to soften hardness; therefore, it can eliminate fishbones stuck in the throat. Crush the root of Yuzhan to extract its natural juice, and instill it into the throat using a bamboo tube. Care must be taken not to let the liquid touch the teeth. To scrape off bone fragments and extract teeth, use one qian of dried Yuzhan Gen, three fen of White Arsenol (Bai Pi), seven fen of [missing character in original text], three fen of Borax (Pengsha), three fen of Salvia Miltiorrhiza Root (Weilingxian), and one and a half fen of Aconitum Kusnezoffii Root (Caowutou). Grind these into powder, apply a small amount to the painful area, and the tooth will fall out naturally.
Also known as Jixingzi (Acute Seed).
Bitter, warm in nature, with slight toxicity.
[Invention/Commentary] Fengxianzi (the seed of Impatiens balsamina) has the most rapid and urgent medicinal properties. Therefore, it can penetrate bones, soften hardness, open orifices, search for and expel stubborn phlegm, deliver dead fetuses, resolve accumulations and masses, treat dysphagia (Yege), and remove fishbones. It is used in Shengjindan to treat mania and dementia. Its use relies on its urgent nature to guide Arsenol (Pi) drugs to induce vomiting and purgation. When cooks boil tough meat, adding a few seeds makes it tender quickly, which verifies its efficacy. Its nature is similar to that of Yuzhan Gen; it should not touch the teeth, as excessive consumption will irritate the throat. When combined with Arsenol and applied to a painful tooth, the tooth will fall out. When pounded together with single-clove garlic and applied externally, abdominal masses will dissipate; adding Moschus (Shexiang) and Ferula (Awei) yields even more rapid results. The flowers are used to treat snakebites; when pounded and taken with wine, the toxin is resolved.
Formally named Fengqie (Phoenix Eggplant).
Acrid, warm in nature, and toxic.
[Invention/Commentary] Infusing this flower in wine treats wind disorders, but shortly after ingestion, one feels dizzy and intoxicated, which poses a risk of stirring up internal fire. Therefore, it is highly recommended as an anesthetic agent. Collect the flowers in August and Cannabis Sativa seeds (Mazihua) in July. Dry them in the shade, grind them into equal parts into powder, and take three qian mixed with hot wine. Shortly thereafter, one feels dizzy and intoxicated. This should be applied before scarification and moxibustion to prevent pain. Decocted water can be used to wash Hongxiangjiao (Tinea Pedis/Foot Fungus) caused by cold-dampness.
It is also known as Yaotanghua (Datura Flower).
Acrid, warm in nature, and highly toxic. It is incompatible with various minerals and flour, and is not used in decoctions.
The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states it treats "thief-wind" causing itching and pain in the skin, warm malaria, severe toxins, and various Bi syndromes.
[Invention/Commentary] Yangzhizhu (Daphne Odora) treats stroke-induced paralysis because its nature dispels wind-cold-damp pathogenic factors. Thus, it can treat various Bi syndromes and severe toxins, which aligns with the treatments recorded in the *Bencao Jing*. It utilizes its toxicity to attack pathological toxins. However, it must be used cautiously according to the patient's deficiency or excess conditions. It is included in Fuhu Dan from the *Taiping Huimin Heji Jufang*. In southern regions, Zhi Zhu Hua San is used to treat Gu poison, indicating its fierce potency. This substance is highly toxic; there have been cases where individuals drank wine infused with its roots, resulting in death. It must not come near the eyes, as it causes visual obscurity. Combined with Arisaema Cum Bile (Tiannanxing), Aconitum Carmichaelii Root (Chuanwu), and Aconitum Kusnezoffii Root (Caowutou), its harmful effects are significantly exacerbated. Poisoning can be treated with Mung Beans (Lvdou).
