[Yi Zhi Zi (Alpinia Oxyphylla Fruit)]
Pungent and warm, non-toxic. Remove the shell and stir-fry with salt water before use.
[Invention/Commentary]
Yi Zhi Zi promotes Yang and dispels Yin; it is suitable for cases of Qi deficiency in the San Jiao (Triple Burner) and Ming Men (Gate of Life). The Spleen governs wisdom; this substance benefits the Spleen and Stomach, regulates Yuan Qi (Original Qi), treats Kidney deficiency manifesting as seminal emission, stomach deficiency causing excessive salivation, and uterine bleeding in women. It treats Heart Qi deficiency leading to nocturnal emission, frequent urination at night, and abdominal pain caused by cold qi. Its mechanism lies in "benefiting Fire within Earth" (warming Kidney Yang through the Spleen/Stomach).
The Suo Quan Wan (Bladder Contraction Pill) from *Ji Yan Fang* treats insufficiency of Bladder Qi. The formula uses Yi Zhi Zi stir-fried with salt (salt removed), equal parts of Wu Yao (Lindera Root) ground into powder, mixed with a paste made from Yam flour boiled in wine, formed into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 70 pills on an empty stomach with salted water. A folk prescription for frequent nighttime urination takes 24 fruits, decocts them with salt, and proves effective. Note: Yi Zhi Zi's function is specifically to tonify Fire; it should not be used mistakenly in cases of Blood dryness with Heat, acute diarrhea due to Damp-Heat, or turbid urine that is yellow and dry due to Heat.
[Bi Bo (Long Pepper Fruit)]
Pungent and greatly warm, non-toxic. Soak in vinegar, scrape off the skin and seeds to avoid damaging Lung Qi and causing Qi rebellion.
[Invention/Commentary]
Bi Bo is pungent and hot, possessing ascending and dispersing properties; it is a key herb for treating headache and Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis). It is used for its ability to enter the Yangming Meridian to disperse floating Heat. Its nature warms the Middle and directs Qi downward, making it suitable for treating Huo Luan (Cholera-like syndrome with watery diarrhea) and fullness in the heart and abdomen. However, its pungent and hot nature consumes and disperses, potentially stirring the Fire of the Spleen and Stomach. Overuse leads to wheezing, coughing, blurred vision, and a sensation of heaviness/dropping in the intestines due to deficiency, as it leaks and depletes True Qi.
[Bi Cheng Qie (Cubeb Fruit)]
Common name: Jiang (Sauce)
Pungent and warm, non-toxic.
[Invention/Commentary]
The leaves are pungent and hot; they direct Qi downward, warm the Middle, break up Phlegm, dissipate stagnant Qi, and resolve Miasma (pestilential pathogens). People in Lingnan eat the leaves together with Areca Nut, utilizing their pungent aroma to break up Miasma Qi. The fruit can be used to season soups, hence called "Jiang"; it belongs to the same category as Bi Bo.
[Rou Dou Kou (Nutmeg Seed)]
Common name: Rou Guo
Pungent and warm, non-toxic. Wrap in glutinous rice flour, roast until cooked before use; do not let it touch iron.
[Invention/Commentary]
Rou Dou Kou is pungent and aromatic, entering the Hand and Foot Yangming Meridians. It warms the Middle and tonifies the Spleen, relieves distension, and secures the Large Intestine. It is a key herb for treating infant milk injury, vomiting, and diarrhea. Er Shen Wan (Two Spirit Pill) combined with Bu Gu Zhi (Psoralea Fruit) treats Kidney Diarrhea, based on the principle of "tonifying the Spleen to treat Kidney pathogenic factors." Note: The Earth element of the Spleen favors aromatic substances; thus, Rou Dou Kou is most compatible with the Spleen and Stomach. Because it directs Qi downward, when the Spleen and Stomach are tonified, their transportation and transformation functions become robust. It is not as harsh and draining as Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) or Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange). It is contraindicated in acute diarrhea due to Heat stagnation because its pungent and warm nature is cloying and stagnant.
