[Text]
Salty, sweet, cold, non-toxic.
Invention: Pearl enters the Jueyin meridians of the foot and hand; therefore, it can calm the soul, stabilize the spirit, brighten the eyes, and remove nebulae. It resolves the toxicity of smallpox boils and carbuncles, as well as smallpox lesions entering the eyes. For treating sudden deafness, grind into a fine powder with water, insufflate into the ear, and allow it to dry and fall off naturally for self-healing. When calcined into ash and added to flesh-regenerating medicines, or applied externally for scalds and burns, it is most excellent. However, it must not come into contact with water; if it does, it will instead rot the flesh.
Also known as Mother-of-Pearl (Zhenzhumu)
Salty, neutral, non-toxic. Those with nine holes are superior. Wrap in dough and roast until cooked, then use after levigation with water. It is incompatible with Yunmu (Mica).
Invention: Concha Heterotrigoniae (Shijueming) has a salty taste and softens hardness. It enters the Liver and Kidney meridians and is a specific medicine for grinding away nebulae and eliminating visual obstructions. It also treats wind-heat invading the Liver, causing restlessness, insomnia, and unsettled spirit (Wang Hun). In the *Ben Shi Fang* (Formulas of Ability), Zhenzhumu Wan (Mother-of-Pearl Pill) is used together with Longchi (Dragon Tooth) to dissipate accumulated heat in the Liver meridian; it must be used with blood-nourishing herbs. It should not be taken for a long time, as it causes coldness in the middle jiao; this is not due to its inherent cold nature, but rather because excessive consumption depletes vital energy.
Salty, neutral, slightly cold, non-toxic. This refers to the shell of the clam with thick lips, smooth surface, and purple mottled patterns. Boil for about half a day in vinegar grain water or vinegar, crush into powder, and use.
The *Shennong Benjing Jing* states it primarily treats malignant sores and corrodes the five types of hemorrhoids.
Invention: Wenhe (Clam Shell) is salty and cold, travels to the Shaoyin meridian of the foot. As a moistening and downward-draining substance, it can quench thirst and promote urination. The *Bielu* states it treats coughing, reverse qi, chest bi syndrome, lower back pain, hypochondriac stiffness, rat abscesses, and metrorrhagia. This aligns with the meaning in the *Benjing Jing* regarding treating malignant sores and corroding hemorrhoids, utilizing the property that saltiness softens hardness and enters the blood level. Zhang Zhongjing, in his treatment of Taiyang disease in *Shanghan Lun*, when water retention leads to increased irritability and a desire to drink yet no actual thirst, and in the *Jingui Yaolue* for cases of unquenchable thirst, both utilize Wenhe San (Clam Shell Powder). For treating vomiting followed by a desire to drink greedily, he uses Wenhe Tang (Clam Shell Decoction). All these applications rely on the principle of using salty-cold substances to purge fluid retention.
Salty, cold, non-toxic. Those with purple mouths are good.
Invention: Generally, salty-cold substances can clear heat, stimulate appetite, and quench thirst. Its shell is reddish; when pounded into powder, it can clear Lung heat, nourish Kidney dryness, descend phlegm, clear fire, stop cough, calm wheezing, dissolve hard accumulations, and dissipate goiters and tumors, making it suitable for all these conditions. It is used in stir-frying Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) and Biaojiao (Fish Maw Gelatin) because its salty taste can activate stagnant properties. A simple prescription for treating breast abscesses (Ruyong) mixes three qian of this powder with half a qian of Gleditsia sinensis thorn powder, taken with warm wine. To treat lung abscesses (Feiyong), grind alone with urine from an uncircumcised boy, and take three doses daily with Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction); this has proven effective repeatedly. However, one must harvest the fruit of Trichosanthes kirilowii (Gualou) in winter, mash it together with the pulp and seeds, return it to the shell, hang it in a ventilated place to dry in the shade, to provide for a year's use; otherwise, it may be difficult to achieve the desired effect.
