Bitter, cold, non-toxic. Rinse clean, roast until yellow, grind into fine powder, and consume mixed with rock sugar.
[Invention] Maggots originate from feces; therefore, they can eliminate accumulations and treat various types of infantile malnutrition (Gan syndrome) with stagnation in children. Their characteristic is eliminating accumulation without damaging healthy Qi. Another method involves killing a dozen large toads and placing them in a jar. Take an unspecified amount of maggot larvae, soak and raise them in river water for three to five days until the larvae have consumed all the toad flesh. Tie the mouth of the jar tightly with hemp cloth, suspend it upside down in running water to wash away impurities, then take fresh tiles, heat them red-hot, and place the maggots on top to bake dry. This is used to treat infantile malnutrition characterized by abdominal distension, weak legs, and nebulae covering the eyes. Each dose is one or two qian; adjust the dosage according to the child's age and size. It is invariably effective; do not neglect it because of its humble nature.
Salty, warm, non-toxic.
[Invention] Flies that feed on dog blood acquire a hot and sharp nature, possessing the power to draw out toxins. Therefore, it is used to treat conditions where smallpox lesions are inverted, dark in color, accompanied by cold lips and mouth. Grind several flies into a fine paste, mix with a small amount of fermented wine, and administer orally. This prescription was proposed by Wen Ren Gui.
Salty, slightly warm, toxic.
The *Shennong Bencao Jing* states it treats evil blood, blood stasis with bi-syndrome qi obstruction, breaks up hard and full masses of blood under the hypochondrium, regulates amenorrhea, and treats ocular discharge (yin fu), blue nebulae, and white membranes.
[Invention] *Larva of Melolontha* (Qicao) lives in burrows in the soil, similar to earthworms; thus, the conditions treated in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* are all related to blood stasis. In the *Jin Gui Yao Lue*, it is used in the Dahuang Zhechong Wan formula to treat deficiency consumption with blood stasis, taking advantage of its ability to resolve hard masses under the hypochondrium. Xu Xueshi used it in Yangxue Dihuang Wan to treat tendon tension, also utilizing its effect on blood stasis. Its juice is dripped into the eyes to remove nebulae, dissipate blood stasis, and relieve pain. The *Qianjin Fang* grinds it into powder for application to infantile umbilical sores; mixed with pig fat, it treats tight lips in infants. The *Jingyan Fang* treats swelling and pain from traumatic blood stasis. The *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* applies mashed form to bamboo or wood splinters embedded in the skin. Su Song recorded using its juice applied to the throat for bi-syndrome (sore throat/throat obstruction); if phlegm descends, the obstruction opens. Zangqi recorded applying it to treat migratory wind urticaria (you feng dan zhen). It is also used to treat wheat awns entering the eye: place the larva above the eye, rubbing through a cloth; the awn adheres to the cloth and is removed.
Sweet, warm, slightly toxic. Those that are white with a yellowish tint, have no filth inside, and contain no moisture are authentic. If the head is hard and the interior is unclean, they are borers from miscellaneous trees. If authentic specimens are difficult to find at once, dried bodies of *Eupolyphaga sinensis* (Dibiechong, ground beetle) calcined to retain their properties may be used as a substitute.
[Invention] *Antherina pernyi* borer (Sangduchong) feeds on wood; its soft nature overcomes hardness. Therefore, it treats severe toxin accumulation in smallpox where lesions are white and depressed, failing to erupt. Juice is extracted and mixed with rice wine for fermentation and administration, causing the lesions to rise. However, patients with thin skin, loose extremities, diarrhea, or aversion to food should use it cautiously, as administration may lead to deterioration and untreatable conditions. The *Qianjin Fang* treats metrorrhagia and leukorrhea (bleeding and discharge of red and white fluids) by administering powdered Sangduchong roasted to ash with warm wine; it is also effective for threatened miscarriage with bleeding.
