[Compendium of Materia Medica]
[Properties and Flavors] Sweet, cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] The leaves are mainly used to eliminate vexatious heat and promote urination. The root has the effects of inducing abortion and facilitating childbirth.
[Verification] It is said: This plant is found everywhere in fields. Seedlings emerge in spring, several inches high, with stems and leaves green like bamboo, resembling the shape of bamboo seeds sprouting after falling to the ground, differing only in being softer and more tender. In August and September, it forms long, slender spikes; one clump has dozens of roots, with seeds forming on the roots, similar to the roots of Ophiopogon japonicus (Maidong) but harder. Locals harvest its roots and seedlings, crush them to extract juice for making yeast to brew wine, which has a particularly fragrant and crisp taste.
[Interpretation] "Dan" (bland/light) cannot be compared to "Nong" (strong/concentrated), describing the appearance of being soaked in water until full. Facing urgent diseases like fire, such as lung heat causing leaf scorching, manifesting as vexatious heat and strangury (difficulty in urination), the leaves can guide the pathogen out and promote the flow of fluids. The root can induce abortion and facilitate childbirth because the Taiyin Lung governs opening and closing (discharge and reception); here it refers to opening blockages to drain acute conditions, belonging to emergency purgative formulas.
[Compendium of Materia Medica]
[Properties and Flavors] Bitter, acrid, cold, non-toxic.
[Indications] Mainly treats all types of carbuncles, back sores, ding sores, scrofula, unknown swellings and toxins, and malignant ulcers.
[Verification] It is said: It grows everywhere, with those from Shouzhou being superior. Seedlings emerge in spring, leaves resembling willow leaves but finer. In summer, it blooms with purple flowers and bears horn-shaped fruits. Those growing on flat land form stems, while those growing in gullies form vines. There is another variety growing among hedges, with leaves like Osmanthus fragrans (Guihua) leaves, flowers hanging down like bells, small and white, now called White Flower Di Ding by people. Using it together with Purple Flower Di Ding results in conflicting efficacy, so they must not be confused.
[Interpretation] Ding sores belong to dry fire. Earth qi exists within the air; that which follows the heavenly mandate to create things is earth. Therefore, it treats conditions belonging to the physical form associated with earth, caused by failing to follow the heavenly mandate, resulting in carbuncles, ding sores, scrofula, etc. It allows them to once again follow the heavenly mandate and flow smoothly through the four limbs, which is the utmost beauty of treatment.
[Small Record]: Bencao Chengya Banji underwent verification into eleven fascicles, attached with Lun Shu regarding malaria, referred to as twelve boxes. When the manuscript was incomplete, the author went blind in the right eye. It had been printed and circulated for a long time. In Yiwu year, when the Jin Yu Pavilion was completed, the left eye became dizzy again. Due to illness and leisure, recalling Mr. Zhang Zhongjing's two treatises, there were over forty kinds of formulas and herbs where verification was lacking or erroneous. In Dingyou year, on Gu Day, I encountered a strange disease, alternating between coma and consciousness dozens of times. In coma, everything was blank; upon waking, I did not know if I was dead. Only concerned with unfinished business, I instructed my pen friend to record daily into a book. Within a month it was finished, and the illness improved slightly. I could support myself with a cane and sit cross-legged in the room, checking Bencao Chengya, handling Lun Shu separately, and thus supplementing and printing the eleventh fascicle. However, this content came from dreams, with many disordered sentences. I hope those with insight will strictly verify and refute it, which would be a great fortune. Alas, previously Su Fangmu stated that its function is to slaughter ghost qi and awaken human soul. Perhaps this fascicle could also be named Tusu Cao. On Lixia day of Wuxu year, Lu Zhiyi, who retired to seclusion, renamed himself Lu Lü. His courtesy name changed, noted by pseudonym Jingong.
