(Shennong Bencao Jing [Classic of Materia Medica], Middle Grade)
Practitioners treating toxic sores and those managing smallpox/rash often use this herb; is it not chilling to the heart? It is warm and orderly, as clean as spring seeds, embodying the image of renewing the old with the new.
[Flavor and Properties] Acrid, Warm, Non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats leukorrhea (white vaginal discharge) in women, amenorrhea (blood obstruction), genital swelling, alternating chills and fever, head wind disorders, tearing caused by pathogenic invasion into the eyes, promotes skin growth, and moistens and brightens complexion.
[Verification] Says: It is available everywhere, especially abundant in the Wu region. Recently, Jianqiao in Qiantang has also begun cultivating it. Seedlings emerge in spring, leaves grow opposite each other, flowers are white with a slight yellow tint. Seeds form after the beginning of Sanfu (the hottest period of summer), and the stalks wither after Start of Autumn. The root is over a chi long, varying in thickness; those with a yellowish luster are superior. In processing, do not use roots where four strands grow together at one place, known as "Sanggong Teng" (Funeral Official Vine). Also, do not use the root of Kalimeris indica (Malan). After harvesting, scrape off the bark, cut into fine shreds, mix equally with slices of Polygonatum sibiricum (Huangjing), steam together for one "Fu Shi" (a traditional time unit approx. 12 hours), dry in the sun, and remove the Huangjing before use. In recent times, calcined alum (Duan Shi) is used for steaming or mixed with calcined alum for sun-drying to prevent insect damage and achieve whiteness. This not only loses its natural nature but also possesses the deepest drying and acrid toxicity; thus, caution must be exercised in its use. Angelica sinensis (Danggui) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with Inula japonica (Xuanfuhua); its toxicity can be moderated by Realgar (Xionghuang) and Sulfur (Liuhuang).
[Collected Explanations] Says: The Chu Ci uses fragrant herbs to metaphorically represent gentlemen, mentioning Bai Zhi frequently. Bai Zhi is indeed Bai Zhi. One substance has multiple names: Qi, Zhi, Fang, Yao, Qi, Fulí, Zefen. Its symbolism regarding the fragrance and moisture of plants is comprehensive. Wang Yi stated: "Those who act with cleanliness wear fragrances," and Bai Zhi belongs to this category. It possesses the qi of spring emergence and renewal, being clean and orderly in generating life. Combining the high brightness of Qingyang (Spring Yang) above with the hidden yin below, it addresses turbidity with cleanliness, just as it treats leukorrhea, amenorrhea, genital swelling, and alternating chills and fever. These conditions in the lower yin reflect turbidity in blood and qi. To moisten and brighten the complexion is to cleanse the turbid complexion; when blood is clean, the complexion becomes radiant. It can be made into facial cream. This indicates that not only internal administration can stimulate the clearing of turbidity, but even external application on the skin can manifest cleanliness.
