[Shangpin (Superior Grade) in the *Benjing*]
Combined with Chuanxiong Rhizome (*Chuanxiong*), its theoretical meaning becomes complete.
[Taste and Nature] Pungent, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats coughing and rebellious qi, calms startled qi, wards off evil influences, eliminates gu poison and gui zhu (a chronic wasting disease attributed to malevolent spirits), and removes three types of parasites. Long-term consumption enhances spiritual clarity.
[Examination] It is stated that Miwu is the seedling of Chuanxiong Rhizome (*Chuanxiong*). The diagrammatic explanation is included under the entry for Chuanxiong Rhizome. Tao Hongjing said: Miwu is also known as Jiangli. The *Guanzi* states: On fertile soils, Miwu grows. Li Shizhen said: Its stems and leaves are tender and luxuriantly messy, hence the name Miwu. The *Zixu Fu* praises Chuanxiong Rhizome (*Chuanxiong*) and Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome (*Changpu*), as well as Jiangli and Miwu. The *Shanglin Fu* says: Covered with Jiangli, mixed with Miwu. This suggests they are not identical substances; likely, when the tender seedlings have not yet formed roots, they are called Miwu; once the rhizomes form, they are called Chuanxiong Rhizome (*Chuanxiong*). Those with large leaves resembling celery are named Jiangli, while those with fine leaves resembling Cnidium Fruit (*Shechuangzi*) are named Miwu. The *Huainanzi* states: What confuses people is like the confusion between Chuanxiong Rhizome (*Chuanxiong*) and Angelica Root (*Bai Zhe*), or between Cnidium Fruit (*Shechuangzi*) and Miwu. Guo Pu’s eulogy says: Miwu is a fragrant herb; even mixed with Cnidium Fruit (*Shechuangzi*), it does not lose its true nature, naturally splitting forth its fragrance. The *Classic of Poetry* says: Gathering Miwu on the mountain, meeting an ex-husband at the foot. The *Ode to Shaomingshen* says: Autumn orchid and Miwu, growing thickly beneath the hall; green leaves and white branches, their fragrance densely assaults me. Humans naturally have beautiful descendants, why should they be sorrowful? Orchids possess national fragrance, and people wear them with affection; in ancient times, they were considered auspicious signs for childbirth. However, the root of Miwu primarily treats female infertility.
My late father said: It receives the Qi of Qingyang, connects with the essence of Jia Gallbladder, and assists the virtue of Shenming.
[Commentary] It is stated: The stems and leaves of Miwu are light, hollow, upright, and straight, luxuriant yet tender, thus named Miwu. Its taste and nature are pungent and warm, inheriting the power of Shaoyang Jia Gallbladder. It sprouts centrally, renewing all transformations. It is gentle and slow, acting as a spring tonic. For conditions characterized by abrupt upward rebellion, disorderly progression, resulting in coughing and rebellious qi or startled qi, the origin lies within the closure and density of Supreme Yin, where beginnings emerge. Thus, it can expel evil influences, gui zhu, gu poison, and parasites. This is what is meant by "generating Yang can kill Yin." If not possessing spiritual penetration, how could such efficacy exist? A guest asked: Why does it treat old wind in the body, long-standing wind in the head, and wind-induced vertigo? I replied: The nature of wind is dissemination. Old wind lingering in the body exists because the fundamental nature of wind is absent. One must first allow Jia Gallbladder to emerge as a beginning, so that Yi Wood can sprout. Although it performs the function of Wood, it实质上 supplements the substance of Wood. A guest asked: Does stopping diarrhea also belong to Jia and Yi? I replied: This is precisely due to Wind-Wood losing control and disrupting the conquered element. It requires the substance and function of Jia and Yi. From the Jia Wood within Earth, extraction occurs, allowing the Water within Earth to borrow the strength of Wood for suction. Although they are enemies, this transforms into a harmonious convergence of three factors.
