(Recorded in the Lower Category of *Shennong Bencao Jing*)
【Flavor and Nature】Bitter, slightly cold, toxic.
【Indications】Mainly treats evil heat qi in the abdomen, various toxins, and kills three types of parasites (San Chong).
【Verification】It is said: It grows in the valleys of Xuan Mountain, as well as Yuanju and Shaoshi Mountain. Currently, it is abundant in the prefectures and commanderies of Shaanxi, Hedong, and between Jingzhou and Xiangyang. It grows in shady mountain areas near water sources. It does not wither in winter or summer. Several roots grow in clusters, each root having multiple stems penetrating through them. The stems are triangular in cross-section, resembling ferns, containing black juice that is quite viscous and slippery. The leaves grow opposite each other in pairs, resembling chicken feathers or phoenix tails, and also similar to the leaves of * Cibotium barometz* (Gouji) but without serrated edges. The color is yellowish-green, darker on the upper surface and lighter on the lower surface. In April, it bears white flowers; in July, it produces black fruits. The fruits gather and curl together, growing from the root. The root is curved with a pointed tip, surrounded by dense black rhizomes, resembling the root of *Cibotium barometz* or Fuchi (a type of plant). The bark is black, and the flesh is red. It stands upright with many branches, resembling "Baitou" (hundred heads). *Jun* (white mushroom) and *Chi Xiaodou* (Adzuki Bean) serve as its guiding herbs, and it can counteract *Shi Zhongru* (Stalactite).
My late father said: Since the hundred heads are penetrated by a single stem, it is named Guanzhong (Penetrating Many). The curled form resembles the image of the summer pulse like a hook, undoubtedly symbolizing the Heart organ. Evil heat in the abdomen is a disease caused by summer qi affecting the zang organs, flowing from the blood vessels into the heart and abdominal regions; such cases require this herb.
【Verification】It is said: The root possesses a hundred heads, while the solitary stem and leaves grow in opposite pairs, seemingly coupling and penetrating the yin aspects, hence the name Guanzhong. It grows abundantly in shady, moist mountain areas, thus inheriting bitter and cold properties. It counters evil heat formed when yang fails to penetrate yin, and regulates various toxins formed when meridians fail to connect. Its growth in yang-exposed areas failing to penetrate the "Four Elements" leads to the formation of three parasites, which may also reflect the imagery of earth using yang qi to kill and store yin. (Since the curled form resembles the summer pulse like a hook, the single stem penetrating the hundred heads symbolizes the Heart's role as the master of all vessels. Borrowing its shape to treat Baihe Bing [Lily Disease] is quite apt, as Baihe Bing involves all vessels originating from one source becoming diseased.)

【Flavor and Nature】Bitter, neutral, non-toxic.
【Indications】Mainly treats carbuncles, swelling, malignant sores, necrotic ulcers, damage to yin, dead muscle, evil qi in the stomach, thief wind, Guiji (sudden severe pain or trauma), and feihuan bu shou (flaccid paralysis where limbs cannot be controlled).
【Verification】It is said: It grows in the valleys of Northern Mountains, as well as Yuanju and Yue Mountain, across various prefectures including Jianghuai, Yellow River, Shaanxi, Han River, and Qian. Sprouts emerge in spring, growing about one chi long. The leaves resemble young palm shoots or *Veratrum nigrum* (Lilu), about two fingers wide, with a fresh green color. In March and April, flower stalks emerge from the leaves, opening purple flowers that resemble grass orchids, specifically Ruolan. It bears yellow-black seeds. The root is white, shaped like a water caltrop with three angles, sprouting buds at the tips of the angles. There are hairs between the nodes, and the texture is extremely sticky, capable of being made into paste. *Zi Yanshi* (Purple Quartz) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with *Lishi* (Chlorite), fears *Li Heren* (Apricot Kernel) and *Xing Heren* (Almond Kernel), and is contrary to *Wutou* (Aconite Root).
【Verification】White corresponds to Metal; "Ji" means arrival. When Metal arrives, it becomes firm. Therefore, it mainly treats carbuncles, sores, necrotic ulcers, dead muscle, and flaccid paralysis. It not only firms the body structure but also strengthens the internal organs.
(In the prisons of Hangzhou, there was a prisoner sentenced to death who developed Feiyong [Lung Abscess]. When pus formed and he was near death, he took a single prescription of Baiji powder and survived. Ten years later, upon execution, his lungs had lost three lobes. The damaged areas were filled with Baiji powder, and the color and texture remained unchanged.)
