[Shennong Bencao Jing, Middle Grade]
[Taste and Nature] Salty, slightly warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Primarily treats metrorrhagia and leukorrhea (heavy bleeding or persistent dripping outside the menstrual period), breaks up blood stasis in the uterus, resolves masses and qi stagnation in the abdomen (abdominal lumps and qi constraint), alleviates alternating chills and fever in the abdomen, treats infertility, impotence with inability to erect, and tonifies deficiencies.
[Verification] It is stated: Yangqishi (Calcium Silicate) is the root of Muscovite. It originates from Qishan, as well as valleys in Yunshan, Taishan, and Langya. Currently, it is only mined in Qizhou; people in other places no longer recognize its source. There is merely one earthen mountain where the stone emerges. Locals call this mountain Yangqi Mountain. The mountain often emits warmth; even during severe winter heavy snows, there is uniquely no accumulated white snow there, likely due to the steaming effect of the stone's qi. There is only one cave on the mountain, which is sealed and closed off. Every early winter, the prefectural official supervises the mining. However, as years accumulate, the cave becomes deeper, requiring the chiseling of other stones to find it, which is very difficult. Those that are bright white like a mirror stand, shaped like cloud heads and rain feet, and light and loose like wild wolf teeth are considered superior grade; those that are yellow are also good; those still bearing muscovite on them are called supreme grade. After selection for tribute, the remainder is sold by the people of Qizhou; otherwise, it cannot be obtained. Gengxin Yuce states: Yangqi is a yang stone. The ones produced from Jianjin Mountain in Qizhou are the best. Those with tips resembling arrowheads have strong potency; those resembling dog teeth have weak potency. Those placed in snow that suddenly vanish without a trace are authentic; those written on paper that float and rise effortlessly are excellent. Sangpiaoxiao (Mantis Egg Case) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with Alisma Rhizome (Zexie), Cinnamomum Cassia Bark (Jungui), Ophiocordyceps Sinensis (Leiyuan - *Note: Traditional text says Leiyuan, usually identified as Polyporus or similar in ancient contexts, but here kept as literal*), Shi Kui (Stone Mallow), and Snake Skin (Shetuipi). It fears Dodder Seed (Tusizi). Avoid mutton blood. It is not used in decoctions.
[Commentary] It is said: Measured by its ability to raise yang, hence named Yangqishi (Yang-Raising Stone). Generally, when yin qi flows, it transforms into yang; when yang qi condenses, it transforms into yin. Therefore, it treats ailments caused by condensation and functions through flow. Yangqishi is the root of muscovite, growing in high mountains. Yangqishi is the mother of muscovite. Muscovite and Yangqishi corroborate each other, revealing their roles in internal preservation and external action.
(The yang outside is the servant of the yin; the yin inside is the guardian of the yang. Yin stores essence and aids yang; yang protects the exterior and maintains solidity. Yangqishi embodies both aspects.)
