(The efficacy of Zhaoshe) is to promote circulation and dispel wind-dampness.
Its efficacy is the same as that of Baihuashe (Bungarus multicinctus), but it is non-toxic, has a milder potency, and possesses a gentle nature. It does not bite. Its eyes do not wither even after death. The best quality is characterized by a slender tail capable of threading through one hundred copper coins.
Those weighing between one qian and one liang are of superior grade. Those weighing ten liang to one yi are of medium grade. Larger ones have reduced efficacy. Remove the head, skin, and bones. Decoct in wine. Or roast with rendered animal fat (su). These are all snake-based medicinal materials.
(Guiban [Tartaric Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum]) tonifies Kidney Yin.
Salty and cold, belonging to extreme Yin. Corresponds to Metal and Water. Nourishes the Heart and enhances wisdom. Benefits the Kidney and nourishes Yin. (Because it possesses spiritual vitality, it aids wisdom; it connects the Heart channel to enter the Kidney channel to nourish Yin.) Treats insufficiency of Yin-blood. Consumptive fever with bone-steaming sensation. Soreness and pain in the lower back and legs. Chronic diarrhea and dysentery. (It can benefit the Large Intestine.) Chronic cough and malaria. (Refers to chronic malaria; if nodules form in the abdomen after years, it is called "Nuomu" [Malaria Mother].) Masses and accumulations (Zhijia), metrorrhagia and metrostaxis. Five types of hemorrhoids and difficult labor. (Grind into powder, take with wine, or add Xionggui [Chuanxiong Rhizoma and Angelicae Sinensis Radix] and Fahu [Capilli Carbonisatus].) Syndromes of Yin deficiency and blood weakness. (Because it benefits Yin and clears heat, it treats these conditions. Li Shizhen said: Both tortoise and deer are efficacious and long-lived. The tortoise often hides its head under its belly, connecting the Ren Mai [Conception Vessel]; therefore, its carapace is used to tonify the Heart, Kidney, and Blood, thereby nourishing Yin. The deer often turns its head toward its tail, connecting the Du Mai [Governor Vessel]; therefore, its horn is used to tonify Mingmen [Gate of Life], Essence, and Qi, thereby nourishing Yang.) Do not use for Kidney deficiency without heat signs. Larger ones have stronger efficacy. (Dead tortoises are good, as they retain more complete Yin energy.) Roast with rendered animal fat. Or roast with wine, vinegar, or lard. Use as charcoal ash. (If used in pills or powders, it must be ground extremely fine, otherwise it may adhere to the gastrointestinal tract and form masses.) Wash clean and crush. Soak in water for three days. Boil with mulberry wood fire to make gelatin. The efficacy of nourishing Yin is even stronger. (Combined with Lujiao Jiao [Cervi Cornus Colla], one Yin and one Yang, named Guilu Erxian Gao [Tortoise-Deer Two Immortals Paste]). Averse to Shashen [Adenophorae Radix]. Gui Niao [Testudinis Urina] penetrates orifices and bones. Dyes hair black. Treats aphonia and deafness. (When reflected in a mirror, seeing its image causes the tortoise to become aroused and urinate; nowadays, some people prick its nose with pig bristles or pine hairs to induce urination.) Treats Tortoise Chest and Tortoise Back. (Massage with tortoise urine.)
