[Fulonggan]
Heavy in flavor, harmonizes the middle jiao (middle burner) and stops bleeding, dries dampness and reduces swelling.
Pungent and warm. Harmonizes the middle jiao and stops bleeding. Expels dampness and reduces swelling. Treats cough with rebellious qi, regurgitation, hematemesis, epistaxis, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, hematuria, spermatorrhea, intestinal wind, and carbuncles and sores. (Apply externally mixed with vinegar.)
[Dongbitu]
Its function is specifically to expel dampness. Do not use if there is no dampness. Refers to yellow earth from the heart of the stove that has been used for many years. (Must use the earth directly below the pot's navel/center.)
Sweet and warm. Treats cholera with restlessness, dysentery, and warm malaria; heals lower body sores, rectal prolapse, infantile wind-navel (umbilical tetanus), and rubs and applies to both dry and wet tinea.
Tao Hongjing said: This is the earth from the east wall of a house. Because it is usually exposed to the sun first. (Chen Cangqi said: The east wall receives the baking heat of the sun first, thus treating epidemic febrile diseases at their onset when the fire qi is weak. By noon, the strong fire qi declines, hence the south wall is not used but the east wall is. Li Shizhen said: In the past, a woman suddenly craved eating river mud, consuming several bowls daily. A hermit in Yutian gave her water mixed with crumbling earth from the wall, after which she recovered. Furthermore, for those with excessive spleen-stomach dampness presenting with vomiting, diarrhea, or cholera, using Dongbitu mixed with fresh well water, stirred until clarified and then taken, stops the symptoms immediately. This is because the Spleen belongs to Earth, delights in dryness and detests dampness. Thus, taking earth illuminated by the true fire of Taiyin guides the generating qi of the true fire to tonify Earth and overcome dampness, causing vomiting and diarrhea to cease naturally. In Lingnan, to treat miasmic malaria, Nanbitu (south wall earth) is used in Xiangchun San. Recent prescriptions use Xibitu (west wall earth) to treat regurgitation and vomiting, perhaps drawing on the qi of the Sun's Li Fire illumination or the converging qi of the West. However, all merely borrow qi to tonify the Spleen and Stomach.)
[Mò]
Pungent and warm, stops bleeding. (Zhu Zhenheng said: Mo belongs to Metal but contains Fire; it is very effective in medicine, and its nature can stop bleeding.) Generates flesh. For flying silk dust or foreign bodies entering the eye, grind thickly and apply as drops. Dripping into the nose stops epistaxis. Grind with pig bile and apply to various carbuncles and sores. (Grinding with vinegar is also acceptable.) Take orally ground with wine to treat retained placenta. Miao Zhixiong said: Mo is pine smoke ash. There are counterfeit versions made from millet grass ash in the world, which must not be used. Only Songyan Mo (pine soot ink) can be used in medicine. Old age and fine smoke quality are preferred; coarse ones are unusable.
