The liver of the otter, also known as "Tian Gou" (Sky Dog).
Sweet and sour in flavor, neutral in nature. It tonifies the middle jiao and benefits qi. It is suitable for consumption. It is indicated for pediatric malnutrition with emaciation and can kill roundworms. The meat is suitable to be eaten. Its efficacy is similar to that of rabbit feces.
Rabbit feces, also known as "Ming Yue Sha" (Bright Moon Sand).
Pungent in flavor, neutral in nature. It expels parasites and improves vision. It treats consumptive disease (Lao Zhai) and five types of childhood malnutrition (Wu Gan), as well as corneal opacity occurring after smallpox/variolae recovery. (Li Shizhen stated: [The otter liver] can detoxify and expel parasites; therefore, it is often used in formulas treating eye diseases, malnutrition, consumptive diseases, sores, and hemorrhoids. Shen Kuo in *Liang Fang* recorded: Wan Rong from Jiangyin suffered from consumptive disease, his four limbs felt like burning, he experienced alternating chills and fever, irritability, and dreamed at night that someone held a moon's brightness into his abdomen, making his heart and bones feel cold. Upon waking, Sun Yuanguan sent medicine, which cured him upon ingestion. Inquiring about the medicine, it was revealed to be "Ming Yue Dan" (Bright Moon Pill), leading him to understand his dream. "Ming Yue Dan" treats parasitic consumptive disease using 49 grains of rabbit feces ground into powder, combined with 49 grains of Nao Sha (Ammonium Chloride) of similar size, ground into powder, and formed into pills the size of wutong seeds with raw honey. Before the full moon, soak licorice root in water overnight, take the juice at dawn, and swallow seven pills. If worms are expelled, immediately clamp them into hot oil to fry and kill; if no worms are passed after three days, administer again.) Otter liver clears liver heat, thereby improving vision. Otter meat cools blood, resolves heat toxicity, and promotes bowel movement. Pregnant women should avoid it (as it may cause miscarriage). Otter brain applied topically treats frostbite.
Otter liver expels parasites and treats transmissive consumptive disease (Chuan Shi Lao).
Sweet and salty in flavor, warm in nature. It stops coughing and expels parasites. It has miraculous effects in treating transmissive ghost-related diseases (Chuan Shi Gui Zhu). (Ge Hong stated: Shi Zhu and Gui Zhu cause alternating chills and fever, silence and depression, unknown source of pain, discomfort everywhere, accumulating over months and years until death, then transmitting to others, potentially wiping out a family. Only by drying otter liver in the shade, grinding it into powder, and taking two qian with water, three times daily, until recovery, can it be treated. Hegao stated: The otter is a yin entity, hiding during the day and emerging at night, thus it treats ghost-related diseases.) Otter meat is sweet and salty, cold in nature. It treats bone-steaming heat due to consumptive disease, stagnation of blood vessels, deficiency and fullness of Ying and Wei, obstruction of meridians in women, blood heat, constipation of the large and small intestines. It treats epidemic febrile diseases, warm diseases, and seasonal diseases in cattle and horses. It should not be consumed in excess, as it depletes male yang qi.
