To disperse and eliminate wind-dampness.
Bitter, pungent. Raw nature is cold, cooked nature is warm. Treats lingering wind-pathogen diseases. Numbness of the four limbs. Cold pain in sinews and bones. Weakness and soreness of the waist and knees. Wind-damp sores and ulcers. Excels at regulating wind-dampness.
It is ultimately a substance that dries and injures blood. Relying on it for tonification is incorrect. (The Bencao [Compendium of Materia Medica] tradition claims its functions are miraculous; modern people take it, yet rarely see effects after years. I suspect the processing method is not perfect? Or perhaps there are distinctions among wind pathogens? Or the medicinal origin is not authentic? This also reveals the error of those who rigidly adhere to prescriptions.) In Jiangdong, pigs are called "shi" (pig). This herb smells like pig odor. Hence the name. Those harvested on the fifth day of the fifth month, the sixth day of the sixth month, and the seventh day of the seventh month are especially good. Remove coarse stems, retain leaves, branches, flowers, and fruits. Mix with wine, steam, and sun-dry nine times. Form into honey pills. (The flavor is bitter and pungent, the nature is cold. It must be steamed and dried nine times. Adding wine and honey removes all the bitter-cold yin turbidity, revealing the clear fragrance and delicious taste. If the number is less than nine, the yin turbidity is not fully removed, and it cannot penetrate the bones to search out wind pathogens and drive away disease.) Crush to extract juice and boil into paste. Use Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Gancao (Licorice Root) decocted into paste, combined with refined honey as the binder. Mixing with wine is particularly excellent. (When wind pathogens travel through the intestines and stomach causing diarrhea, grind the herb into powder, make pills with vinegar paste the size of paulownia seeds, take thirty pills each time, washed down with plain water.)
Also known as Jinfei Cao (Golden Boiling Grass). To purge downward, descend qi, and resolve phlegm.
Bitter, pungent. Can descend qi and move fluids. Salty flavor can soften hardness. Slightly warm. Can unblock blood vessels. Enters the Lung and Large Intestine meridians. Resolves phlegm nodules and hard epigastric masses. Coughing up sputum sticky as glue or lacquer.
Incessant belching. ("Yi", pronounced jiè, commonly written as "ai"; chest qi is not smooth, thus belching occurs to unblock it. This belongs to deficiency patterns, but can also involve phlegm and fire, belonging to excess patterns. Zhang Zhongjing treated post-sweating, post-emesis, or post-purgation cases presenting with epigastric fullness/hardness and belching using Daizhe Xuanshen Tang [Magnetite and Inula Decoction].) Massive abdominal edema/water swelling. Wind-damp bi-syndrome. It is a dispersing drug. Causes loose stools/diarrhea in the large intestine. Contraindicated for deficient persons. The root treats wind-dampness. The leaves treat ding-sores and toxic swellings. Applied externally to metal wounds. (Stops bleeding.) Resembles Jinqian Ju (Money Chrysanthemum). Remove skin, pedicel, stamen, and calyx. Use after steaming. When added to decoctions, it must be wrapped well in silk cloth. (Because it has fine hairs, which may irritate the lungs and cause coughing.)
