(Tusizi / Cuscutae Semen) warms and tonifies the three Yin meridians of the foot (Liver, Spleen, Kidney). It is sweet, pungent, and warm in nature. It consolidates the upright Yang Qi (Zheng Yang Zhi Qi) and enters the Foot Three Yin meridians (Liver, Spleen, Kidney). It strengthens Yin, benefits essence, and is warming without being drying. It treats five types of fatigue and seven kinds of injuries (Wu Lao Qi Shang).
It treats urinary dribbling (Niao You Yu Li), spontaneous emission of cold semen (Han Jing Zi Chu), bitter taste in the mouth, dryness, and thirst. (Zhang Jingyue stated: To treat Xiao Ke [Wasting-Thirst], decoct it and drink as desired.) It dispels wind accumulation caused by cold blood (Han Xue Wei Ji), dispels wind, brightens the eyes, stops diarrhea, and promotes appetite. (Processed with wine into powder, regular consumption aids digestion rapidly, like snow melting in hot water.) It tonifies Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), assists sinews and vessels, boosts qi and strength, and makes the body robust and healthy. It is a superior herb for regulating Yuan Qi (Primal Qi). (When combined with Shudi [Rehmanniae Radix Preparata], it is named Shuang Bu Wan [Double Tonification Pill]; when combined with Xuanshen [Scrophulariae Radix], it is named Xuan Tu Dan [Dark Tusita Elixir].) Those with excessive fire in the Kidney, strong yang that does not flaccid, or dry constipation should avoid it.
Tusizi has no roots and climbs over grass; its seeds are like millet grains. It works best when processed with wine. Select impurities, wash thoroughly with wine, remove soil, sun-dry, and store in porcelain vessels to prevent loss of aroma. For decoctions, stir-fry lightly and crush. For pills, grind separately into fine powder. Ancients found it difficult to grind finely, so they soaked it in wine overnight, boiled until silk threads appeared, pounded into cakes, dried, and then ground for finer powder. However, prolonged wine soaking often causes an sour, foul odor, losing its mild and fragrant quality, rendering it largely ineffective. Market Tusizi cakes today often contain wheat flour, altering the flavor completely; these must not be used. Shanyao [Dioscoreae Rhizoma] serves as the guiding herb (Shi).
(Fupenzi / Rubi Fructus) warms and tonifies the Liver and Kidney, astringes essence, and reduces urination. It is sweet, sour, and warm. It benefits the Kidney to consolidate essence, tonifies Liver deficiency to brighten the eyes, restores impotence, and reduces urination. (Kou Zongshi said: Taking it prevents urine from overflowing the chamber pot, hence the name; Li Dangzhi said: The fruit resembles an inverted basin, hence the name.) It heals severe injuries, beautifies complexion, and darkens hair and beard. (Applying juice to hair turns white hair black.) It facilitates pregnancy in women. Mixed with honey as a paste, it treats Lung Qi deficiency and cold. (Li Shicai said: It strengthens the Kidney without dry-heat bias, consolidates essence without stagnation harm; it is a precious item like gold and jade.) Its nature is astringent; those with difficulty urinating should not take it. Remove stems, wash clean, pound into cakes, and steam with wine before use. Leaf juice applied to eyes expels eye worms, removes skin redness, absorbs dampness, and stops tearing. For ulcerated sores, after washing with sour plant water, sprinkle powdered Fupenzi leaves once daily until healed.
