Tonifies the Kidney and Mingmen (Kidney and Gate of Vitality), dispels wind-dampness.
Pungent, bitter, and warm. Strengthens yang and tonifies the kidney. Disperses cold and expels wind. Dries dampness and kills parasites. Treats impotence and damp scrotum. In women, treats vaginal pain and pruritus vulvae. (Caused by dampness generating parasites; wash with a decoction of Cnidii Fructus [Shechuangzi] mixed with Alum [Fan].) Deficient-cold of the uterus. Failure of the vaginal opening to close after childbirth. (Apply hot-compress with stir-fried seeds.) Diseases of the Kidney and Mingmen. Soreness and weakness of the lower back, body bi-syndrome (painful obstruction). Leukorrhea, rectal prolapse. As well as stubborn tinea corporis/cruris and malignant sores. (Rubbing externally yields good results.) Various wind-damp diseases: boil in water for bathing to stop wind-induced pruritus. (Li Shizhen said: This is a herb acting on the qi level of the Kidney, Mingmen, and Sanjiao. It not only benefits men but also women. Why do people discard this herb and seek tonics from distant regions? Is this not valuing hearsay over what is before one's eyes?) Those with easily agitated Kidney fire should avoid consuming it. Resembles Fennel Seed (Xiaohuixiang) but is finer. Lightly stir-fry to eliminate toxicity so it is no longer pungent/spicy. (Steamed three times mixed with Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata [Dihuangji], which is better.) Incompatible with Moutan Cortex [Danpi], Fritillariae Bulbus [Beimu], and Crotonis Fructus [Badou]. (Shenghui Fang records: For winter throat bi with swelling and pain where oral medication cannot be taken, burn Shechuangzi smoke in a bottle and inhale through the mouth against the bottle opening; phlegm will naturally discharge.)
Also written as "Bo". Dries out stomach cold, disperses floating heat.
Pungent and hot. Eliminates stomach cold. Resolves phlegm, promotes digestion, directs rebellious qi downward. Treats watery diarrhea and qi-type dysentery, intestinal borborygmus due to deficient-cold. (Also enters the Large Intestine channel; treats vomiting of sour fluid.) Cold-phlegm, nausea. Accumulation masses (Pi), Yin hernia. Pungently disperses floating heat of the Yangming channel. Treats headache. (For hemi-cephalic wind, hold warm water in the mouth, and according to the side of pain, insufflate one 'zi' amount of powder into the nostril; effective.) Toothache. (Cold toothache: suitable to use Dry Ginger [Ganjiang], Long Pepper [Bibo], Asarum [Xixin]; Heat toothache: suitable to use Gypsum Fibrosum [Shigao], Natrii Sulfas [Yaxiao]; Wind toothache: suitable to use Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus [Zaojiao], Bombyx Batryticatus [Jiangcan], Vespa Crabro Nest [Fengfang], Aconiti Lateralis Radix [Chuanwu], Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix [Caowu]; Worm toothache: suitable to use Calcined Stone [Duanshi], Realgar [Xionghuang].) Nasal sinusitis (Bi Yuan). Ancient formulas rarely used this herb because it dissipates true qi, stirs up Fire of the Spleen and Lung, and damages the eyes and ears. Growth/Processing: Remove the stem when green. Soak in vinegar overnight. Bake dry. Scrape off the skin and seed-like tubercles until clean. To avoid damaging the human Lung.
(Weisheng Yijian Fang records: For clear nasal discharge, insufflate Bibo powder into the nose; effective.)
