[honeysuckle]
Clears heat and detoxifies.
Sweet and neutral in nature. Clears heat, detoxifies, and tonifies deficiency. (Generally, substances with a sweet taste have tonifying properties.) Treats wind-related conditions, nourishes blood, and relieves thirst. (Zhu Danxi stated: For thirst occurring after the healing of carbuncles and sores, swallowing Ren Dong Wan [Honeysuckle Pill] with Huang Qi Liu Yi Tang [Astragalus Six-to-One Decoction] is highly appropriate. Honeysuckle nourishes blood, while Astragalus tonifies qi; thus, how can thirst arise?) Treats dysentery and alleviates abdominal distension. (Li Shicai noted: Nowadays, people only use honeysuckle for dermatological conditions, forgetting its ability to treat dysentery and bloating. Why is the fortune of honeysuckle so constrained?) Treats carbuncles, sores, scabies, tinea, yaws, and malignant ulcers; intestinal wind with bloody dysentery; and five types of shi zhu [a chronic wasting disease attributed to evil spirits or parasites]. It grows by absorbing the energy of spring, possesses an extremely balanced and moderate nature, and therefore has no contraindications. Its vines and leaves are named Rendong [Lonicera japonica], because they do not wither in winter. Dried forms are less potent and slower-acting than fresh ones. Brewing it in wine, drinking it as tea, or preparing it as an ointment are all excellent methods. (Rendong Wine: Highly effective for treating carbuncles, back abscesses, and all kinds of malignant toxins when taken at the onset. Formula: 5 liang of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos [Honeysuckle Flower], 1 liang of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma [Licorice Root], 2 bowls of water, plus 1 bowl of wine. Simmer slightly, divide into three doses, and consume within one day and night. For severe cases, take two doses per day until bowel movements become smooth, indicating the medicinal power has reached the intestines. Rendong Pill: Using the same proportions, boil in wine, dry, powder together with Licorice Root, and form pills using the residual wine as a binder. Chen Zangqi stated: For heat-toxin bloody dysentery, decoct strongly and drink; or powder it, mix with sugar, and take regularly to make smallpox lesions sparse and easy to erupt.) High dosage is required for efficacy. (Recently, lacquer flower has been used to counterfeit honeysuckle, causing significant harm. Lacquer flower is short, has many stems, is black in color, and lacks fragrance, making it easy to distinguish.)
[Rose Root]
Drains damp-heat.
Bitter and astringent, cold in nature. Enters the Stomach and Large Intestine meridians. Clears wind-heat and damp-heat, promotes tissue regeneration, and kills parasites. Treats diarrhea, dysentery, and xiao ke [wasting-thirst syndrome]; toothache and oral ulceration/decomposition (decoct and gargle/swallow). Treats enuresis, excessive sleepiness, carbuncles, sores, and tinea. (Qian Jin Fang states: Rose Root and Agriophyllum squarrosum are sacred medicines for treating oral ulcers. Agriophyllum squarrosum is common everywhere; it bears pale red-purple flowers, has slightly curved awns about two cun long, tastes bitter and pungent, has slight toxicity, and treats malignant sores with parasites and dental/oral ulcers.) Its fruit is named Yingshi, sour and warm in nature, with similar main indications. The flowers come in yellow, white, red, and purple varieties; those with a yellow center, white petals, and pinkish hue are used medicinally. (The Baopuzi formula: To treat traumatic injuries with swelling and pain, burn Rose Root to ash, take one cubic inch spoonful with warm water each time, three times daily.)
