Xuan (Gouteng), dispels wind-heat, calms fright.
Sweet, slightly bitter, cold in nature. Clears heart-heat, pacifies liver-wind, relaxes sinews to eliminate dizziness, descends qi and expands the middle jiao. Treats adults with vertigo and visual dizziness, and children with convulsive crying and spasms.
(Tight contraction of sinews is called "yuan", relaxation and extension of sinews is called "xi", continuous contraction and extension is called "yuan", now referred to as twitching or clonus.) Also treats external shock and fetal wind, macules and rashes. Primarily treats diseases caused by liver-wind and ministerial fire. When wind is still and fire subsides, all symptoms naturally resolve. (Ministerial fire circulates through the gallbladder, sanjiao, and pericardium.) Dispels liver-wind without causing dryness, thus achieving a balanced nature. Therefore, it is cherished in pediatrics. However, its nature is slightly cold; those without excess heat should not take it. Its thorns resemble fishing hooks, hence the name. Vines that are thin and have many hooks are of good quality. (Remove the stems, use only tender hooks, and the efficacy increases tenfold.) Long decoction reduces potency. (Wait until other herbs are decocted, then add Gouteng, boil for one or two boils, and remove; this yields good results. *Shenghui Fang* treats sudden epilepsy with Gouteng and Zhi Gancao each 2 qian, decocted in water and taken orally, effective.)
Kills parasites and eliminates accumulation.
Sweet, warm in nature. Kills parasites and eliminates accumulation. Treats five types of childhood malnutrition (wuzheng) with turbid urine, dysentery, sores, and tinea; it is an essential medicine for various pediatric diseases. (*Bencao Jingshu* states: Five types of wuzheng with turbid urine, dysentery, and abdominal worms are all caused by spleen and stomach weakness, leading to stagnation of milk and food, and obstruction by damp-heat. When the spleen and stomach are healthy, accumulations dissipate, damp-heat clears, and water passages flow freely. Most antiparasitic herbs are bitter and acrid; only Shijunzi and Feizi are sweet and kill parasites. In the first half of the lunar month, worm heads point upward; in the middle half, they lie horizontally; in the last half, they point downward. *Daozang* states: From the 1st to the 5th day, worm heads point upward. For those with parasitic diseases, eating a few fruits on an empty stomach during the first half of the month will cause the worms to die and be expelled. Note: Dihuang and Huma are also sweet and can kill parasites.) Those without parasite accumulation should not eat it. Produced in Min and Shu regions. The fruit has five petals with ridges, and the kernel inside resembles that of Feizi. It can also be roasted and eaten. If kept too long, the oil turns black and it becomes unusable. Avoid drinking hot tea after consumption, as it may cause diarrhea.
Also known as Xuanhua. Nourishes yin, reconnects sinews and bones.
Sweet, acrid, warm in nature. Tonifies labor damage, benefits essence and qi, reconnects sinews and bones. (Crush the root to extract juice, apply drops to the injured area, and cover with the residue; change three times a day, and broken sinews will reconnect within half a month.) This is the flower of Convolvulus arvensis (Bells-vine).
