Sandalwood (Tan Xiang)
Aromatic in odor, non-toxic. Pungent and warm, enters the Lung and Stomach meridians. Its texture is dry and efficacious; it dissebrates and regulates Qi in the Upper and Middle Jiao. It may eliminate pathogenic factors and repel foul odors, or unblock the diaphragm to broaden the chest. (Sandalwood originates from various countries in the southern seas. The sandalwood produced in China has trees similar in appearance but lacks fragrance. Its taste is pungent and warm, its odor aromatic and color white. It enters the Qi aspect of the Upper Jiao of the Lung and Stomach meridians, specifically regulating all stagnant and rebellious Qi in the Upper Jiao. As for its effects of harmonizing the middle, promoting appetite, and repelling evil spirits, these are all due to its pungent, warm, and aromatic properties.)
Dragon's Blood (Jiang Xiang)
Its nature and flavor are the same as Sandalwood, but its color and shape differ. It enters the Liver meridian to break blood stasis, capable of eliminating lingering blood stagnation. It repels foul odors and searches out pathogens, resolving epidemic pestilences. (The nature, flavor, and origin of Dragon's Blood are the same as Sandalwood, differing only in its purple color. It enters the Blood aspect of the Heart and Liver meridians, moves blood stasis, treats fractures, and has specific efficacy whether applied externally or taken internally. Regarding repelling evil and resolving epidemics, the principle is the same as that of Sandalwood.)
Styrax (Su He Xiang)
Boiled into a paste with juices of various aromatics, it opens orifices, repels pathogenic Qi, and resolves Qi stagnation. It mainly treats diseases of the Heart and Spleen, and can stabilize critical conditions of stroke with phlegm obstruction. Taste is bitter and sweet; nature is warm and non-toxic. (Styrax also originates from various southern countries. Some say it is resin, others say it is made by boiling the juices of various aromatics; it is unknown which is correct. Its taste is sweet with a slight pungency and bitterness. Its aroma is intense, surpassing other aromatics. Nature is warm and non-toxic. It enters the Heart and Spleen meridians, opens orifices, and searches out pathogens. It can be used for all cases of wind-stroke, phlegm-stroke, or Qi-stroke where pathogens have trapped inside causing closure. However, it must not be used for apoplexy-like conditions belonging to deficiency and collapse.)
Frankincense (Ru Xiang)
Harmonizes the Ying (Nutritive) level and stabilizes pain, invigorates collaterals and relaxes sinews. Its aromatic penetration enters the Heart meridian; pungent, warm, and slightly bitter. (Frankincense originates from Persia and other southern countries; it is resin. Taste is pungent and bitter, nature is warm. Its aromatic and moistening quality enters the Ying level of the Heart and Spleen meridians, harmonizes the Ying level, relaxes sinews, invigorates blood, and stabilizes pain. Whether used internally or externally, the principle remains the same.)
