[Dongcai (Mussel)]
Taste: salty. Nature: warm. Benefits Yin and augments Yang. Treats deficiency exhaustion (Xu Lao). Fills essence and nourishes blood. (Dongcai grows in the sea, resembling a small clam, with a few short hairs inside. Taste: sweet and salty. Nature: warm. It is a bivalve possessing Yin characteristics; thus, it can enter the Kidney channel to benefit Yin and treat depletion of essence and blood. Due to its warm nature, it can also nourish the Yang within Yin. However, this item serves merely as food for sustenance or culinary use. Relying on it as a medicinal agent for treating disease may be insufficient in efficacy. Generally, bivalves have cold and cool properties, whereas Dongcai is described as warm, which seems not entirely accurate.)
[Qishe (Agkistrodon)]
Penetrates bone to search out wind; all are salty, warm, and good at moving through channels. Treating Bi syndrome (painful obstruction) and unblocking collaterals is due to its mild toxicity and agile nature. Its skin has the function of resolving fistulas and can also dispel wind and remove nebulae. Its therapeutic uses include killing parasites; it can also be used for ear insufflation and applying to sores. (Qishe tastes sweet and salty, is warm in nature, and has great toxicity. Snakes are prone to crawling and shedding skin, similar to how wind moves swiftly and changes frequently. Thus, it penetrates meridians, searches out wind pathogens, travels inward to zang-fu organs, and reaches outward to the skin. It is a medicine for treating various wind disorders, various Bi syndromes, and all kinds of leprous diseases. However, there are many excellent medicines for treating diseases; why resort to such toxic substances for a chance of success? ○ The nature and taste of snake skin are roughly the same. Because it is skin, it is good at treating skin diseases caused by wind pathogenic factors, such as scabies and tinea. Its nature is prone to shedding, so it can also remove eye nebulae and resolve fistulas. However, it should only be used externally and need not be included in internal prescriptions.)
[Jiapian (Pangolin Scales)]
Reaches the disease site to achieve success. Enters the Stomach channel and acts on the Liver channel. Resolves carbuncles and promotes the eruption of pox. Nature: salty and cold, good at moving through channels. Treats Bi syndrome, disperses blood stasis, unblocks collaterals, searches out wind, resolves nodules (ant-like masses), and specifically promotes lactation. (The pangolin belongs to the scaled class, capable of living both in water and on land. Jiapian refers to its scales. Taste: salty. Nature: cold. Slightly toxic. Enters the Blood aspect of the Liver and Stomach channels. Treats wind-Bi, circulates through meridians, and can directly reach the disease site. Therefore, it can dissipate all kinds of carbuncles and ulcers that have not yet suppurated, and promote rapid suppuration in those that already contain pus. Its ability to treat breast conditions is because it enters the Stomach channel, while the breasts belong to the Yangming channel.)
