Ludou (Rhizoma Euphorbiae Humifusae)
Enters the Yangming channel, with functions of promoting lactation and resolving carbuncles. Its taste is salty and bitter, nature is cold, and it is non-toxic. It clears damp-heat, kills parasites, and cools blood. It eliminates chronic infantile malnutrition (Gan syndrome). (Ludou is salty and bitter in taste and cold in nature. It enters the blood aspect of the Yangming channel. Although the *Shennong Bencao Jing* states that taking it benefits the human body, it is ultimately a draining and purgative substance. Therefore, it can promote lactation, resolve carbuncles, clear damp-heat, and treat Gan accumulation; all these belong to diseases of the Yangming channel. Observing its naming and meaning, the efficacy of Ludou can be generally imagined.)
Resolves toxin from smallpox by relaxing the muscle layer; its taste is sweet and nature is neutral, entering the blood aspect. For otomycosis (Ear Gan) causing erosion and ulceration, when roasted black, it harmonizes the Ying (Nutritive) level. (Yanzhi is made from the juice of Carthamus tinctorius [Honghua] or stained with Arnebia euchroma [Zicao]. Thus, its function is similar to Honghua and Zicao, excelling in invigorating blood and promoting blood circulation. When blood circulates freely, the muscles relax; when muscles relax, toxins are resolved. Whether treating Ear Gan or smallpox toxin internally or externally, it can be used. It enters the blood aspect of the Heart and Liver, and its sweet and neutral nature has no disadvantage of bias.)
Qianniu (Fructus Pharbitidis)
The colors and shapes differ between black and white varieties, which should be distinguished. It drains Lung Qi, moves phlegm, reduces distension, and expels pathogens at the Qi level. Its taste is pungent, nature is warm, and it is toxic. It searches for wind, guides out stagnation, unblocks the intestines, promotes urination, and reaches the uterus. (Qianniu is pungent in taste and hot in nature. It drains Lung Qi and benefits the Large Intestine, expelling phlegm and eliminating fluid retention. It can also address severe knotting of damp-heat in the Qi level. However, as an attacking and reducing substance, if there is no water-dampness pathogenic stagnation or severe knotting in the Lung and Large Intestine, it should not be administered lightly.)
Reduces swelling, searches for pus, and its nature is fierce; kills parasites, expels dampness, and its taste is sour and warm. (Tenghuang is formed by boiling and refining vine sap. It is sour, astringent, and toxic. It can kill parasites and use toxicity to combat toxicity, both being external treatment functions. Due to its sour and astringent nature, it has a binding intention; extreme contraction leads to dispersion. Therefore, it is often used in dispersing medicines for carbuncles, sores, and ulcers.)
Warms and reaches the Liver and Spleen; used to search for wind and overcome dampness. Its taste returns to pungent and bitter; its function is to eliminate bi-syndrome (painful obstruction) and relax sinews. (Qingfengteng: All vines can unblock meridians and enter collaterals. This herb is bitter and neutral, good at treating wind diseases, thus treating all forms of Jiebi (joint pain) and numbness/paralysis. Infusing it in wine is particularly effective. Since wind qi connects to the Liver, it enters the Liver; wind overcomes dampness, and dampness connects to the Spleen.)
