(Qumai) Bitter and cold in nature, with a propensity to descend. It descends Heart Fire and benefits the Small Intestine, expels pathogenic heat from the Bladder, breaks blood stasis and unblocks orifices, resolves carbuncles and brightens the eyes, unblocks meridians, and treats strangury (Lin syndrome).
Contraindicated if accompanied by Cold of the Heart.
Contraindicated if accompanied by Cold of the Kidney.
(Zexie) Pungent, sweet, and bland in taste, neutral in nature. It connects upwards to the Pericardium and downwards to the Large Intestine, Small Intestine, and Bladder. It descends Heart Fire and thereby clears Lung Heat, guides damp-heat out through urination, and additionally unblocks bowel movements. It benefits the nine orifices, blood vessels, and joints, treats fire syndromes of the Upper, Middle, and Lower Jiao, and addresses drowsiness caused by Spleen Heat.
(Cheqianzi/Zhu Ling context implied) Sweet, cold, and bland with a seeping property. It specifically eliminates damp-heat in the blood level of the Small Intestine and Bladder, treating swelling, fullness, and strangury.
Contraindicated if accompanied by Cold pouring into the Bladder.
Contraindicated if accompanied by Cold of the Liver.
Contraindicated if accompanied by Cold of the Lung.
Refer to principles of "Unblocking and Tonifying" for cases requiring such treatment.
Refer to principles of "Harmonizing the Lung" when Lung Qi is harmonious.
Refer to principles of "Harmonizing the Large Intestine" when Large Intestine function is harmonious.
(Huashi) Bitter, sweet, and bland, neutral in nature. Enters the Bladder and Kidney channels. Its action ascends yet can descend; it promotes diuresis and moves water. Similar to Fuling (Poria), but its draining action is more intense. It unblocks orifices, induces sweating, and resolves damp-heat.
Refer to principles of "Harmonizing the Spleen" when Spleen Qi is harmonious.
Refer to principles of "Harmonizing the Liver" when Liver Qi is harmonious.
Refer to principles of "Harmonizing the Small Intestine" when Small Intestine function is harmonious.
(Rougui/Guizhi context implied) Sweet and warm. It drains Ministerial Fire from the Bladder, guides clear Qi upward to the mouth, stops polydipsia (Xiao Ke), and should be used after removing silkworm pupae.
Contraindicated if the Lung is under attack/draining.
Contraindicated if "Unblocking and Attacking" methods are required.
Contraindicated if the Liver requires dispersing.
(Qianghuo context implied) Pungent, bitter, and warm. Its aroma is potent, entering the Bladder channel to treat wandering wind. It also enters the Qi level of the Liver and Kidney to search out wind and overcome dampness. It treats diseases of the Du Mai (Governing Vessel) manifesting as pain in all joints of the body.
(Fangfeng context implied) Pungent, sweet, and slightly warm. It searches out the Liver and drains the Lung, disperses stagnant Qi in the head and eyes, and removes retained dampness in collaterals. It primarily treats Wind pathogens in the Upper Jiao and Bladder channel syndromes. It serves as a guiding herb for the Spleen and Stomach to remove wind and overcome dampness. When combined with Congbai (Scallion White), it can circulate throughout the body.
(Gaoben context implied) Pungent and warm, vigorous and strong. It is a Wind herb for the Bladder channel. It is essential for headaches connected to the brain caused by Cold stagnation in this channel. It treats rigidity of the spine and厥 (Jue/cold extremities) due to Du Mai disease, and can also descend to eliminate Cold-dampness.
Contraindicated if the Lung requires dispersing.

Contraindicated if accompanied by Cold of the Liver.
Contraindicated if accompanied by Cold of the Spleen.
Contraindicated if accompanied by Cold of the Small Intestine.
(Yinchen context implied) Bitter and cold. It dries dampness and overcomes heat. Entering the Bladder channel, it induces sweating and promotes diuresis to drain Damp-Heat from the Spleen and Stomach. It is the chief herb for treating Jaundice (specifically Yang Jaundice).
Contraindicated if accompanied by Cold of the Stomach.
Contraindicated if accompanied by Cold of the Small Intestine.
(Zhuling context implied) Sweet, salty, and slightly cold. It drains Fire pathogens from the Bladder and Kidney channels and promotes urination. Its efficacy lies specifically in promoting diuresis and moving water. It treats all damp-heat diseases. Once damp-heat is eliminated, Clear Qi ascends, thus it can also stop vertigo/dizziness, but it may impair vision.
