(Gegen, Puerariae Radix) Sweet and warm in nature, without damaging the primordial Qi. It strengthens the Spleen, opens the appetite, aids digestion, harmonizes the Middle Jiao, directs Qi downward to resolve accumulations, and is regarded as a supreme herb for strengthening the Spleen and warming the Middle. It should be used after stir-frying.
(Tianhuafen, Trichosanthis Radix) Sweet and neutral in nature. It harmonizes the interior, nourishes the Spleen and Stomach, resolves stagnations, invigorates blood, stops sweating, benefits the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), and unblocks water passages. The aged variety is superior.
(Baizhu, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Sweet and neutral in nature. It strengthens the Spleen and warms the Stomach, aids digestion and directs Qi downward, transforms stagnation and regulates the Middle, expels phlegm accumulations, breaks up masses and lumps (Zhengjia), dispels damp-heat, and stops diarrhea and dysentery.
(Chaihu, Bupleuri Radix) Acrid, sweet, and warm in nature. It opens the stomach and promotes Qi movement, regulates the Middle and transforms food and fluids, resolves stagnations, and treats eye pain caused by rebellious Phlegm-Qi.
(See entry under Large Intestine Harmonizing).
(Huangqin, Scutellariae Radix) Sweet and warm in nature. It is a herb of the Stomach Meridian that dries dampness, stops bleeding, reduces swelling, and eliminates phlegm. (See entry under Spleen Harmonizing).

(See entry under Lung Harmonizing).
(Dahuang, Rheum Palmati Radix et Rhizoma) Extremely bitter and extremely cold in nature. It enters the Blood aspect of the Spleen, Stomach, Liver, Pericardium, and Large Intestine. Its nature is sinking rather than floating; its action is moving rather than stationary. It is used to scour the intestines and stomach, purge dry accumulations, and eliminate stasis-heat. It can push out the old and bring forth the new, treating all conditions of excess heat with latent fire within the blood. Its action is drastic and fierce; it should not be used unless the six pulses are deep and solid. If used when the disease is in the Qi aspect, it constitutes an unjust attack on healthy tissue. Processing into cooked form slightly moderates its effect; wine-soaking also allows it to ascend to clear pathogenic heat.

It can raise Stomach Qi upward into the Lung to generate fluids and quench thirst, induce sweating and release the muscle layer, disperse Fire depression, and resolve alcohol and drug poisons. It treats diarrhea due to sinking of Clear Qi, as well as Cold Damage, malaria, and dysentery. It should not be used at the initial stage of Taiyang disease, lest it draw pathogens into the Yangming channel. Caution is advised in cases where excessive ascending and dispersing leads to excess above and deficiency below. Ge Hua (Puerariae Flos) is particularly effective in resolving alcohol toxicity. Raw Ge Zhi juice is extremely cold, clearing severe heat from Warm Diseases, and treating hematemesis and epistaxis.
