Shatang fruit (from *Bencao Gangmu*): Mainly consumed to eliminate edema disease (from *Shan Hai Jing*). [Origin] (Li Shizhen said): According to *Lüshi Chunqiu*, the delicious fruit is that of Shatang. Currently, it grows in Ningxiang, Longshui, and Luofu Mountain in the Lingnan region. The tree resembles a pear tree (*Pyrus*), bears yellow flowers and red fruits, tastes like a plum but has no core. [Taste] Sweet. [Nature] Neutral.
Non-toxic. (*Bencao Gangmu*) Main indications: relieves thirst, beautifies complexion, benefits qi (Su Gong). [Names] Yanying, Sheshe, Shanputao (Mountain Grape), Yegputao (Wild Grape); Vine name Mulong. [Origin] (Su Song said): Fruits grow in Jiangdong, resemble grapes but are smaller, taste sour, and can also be used for brewing wine. (Li Shizhen said): Wildly growing in forests and suburbs, it can also be propagated by cuttings. The vines, leaves, flowers, and fruits are indistinguishable from common grapes, except the fruits are small and round, and not very purple. The *Classic of Poetry* mentions "eating you in the sixth month," referring to this plant. When air is blown into its stem, juice flows out, similar to *Tongcao*. [Seedling] Su Gong said: It is a climbing vine; seedlings and leaves resemble grapes but are smaller, with some stems as thick as a bowl. In winter, only the leaves fall while the vines survive. The vine juice is sweet, and the fruit is sweet and sour; this is Qiansui Teng (Thousand-Year Vine). (Chen Zangqi said): Su Gong's annotation that Qiansui Teng is wild grape is an erroneous statement. Qiansui Teng vines resemble kudzu (*Pueraria*), have white undersides on leaves, and bear red edible fruits. If the vine is cut and ventilated, there is no sweet juice. See details under the entry for Qiansui Teng in the Herb section. (Li Shizhen said): The shape described by Su Gong is indeed similar, but it is not Qiansui Teng. [Taste] Sweet, Sour. [Nature] Neutral. The vine treats hiccups and vomiting/hiccups after cold damage; crushing and drinking the juice is effective (Su Gong). Relieves thirst and promotes urination (*Bencao Gangmu*). [Treatment] Vomiting and reversal cold (Jue Ni): Decoct the vine and sip or drink the juice. ○ Visual obstruction/cataracts: Soak the vine in water, blow air through it to collect the juice, and drip into the eyes to remove heat-induced red and white visual obstructions. [Combined Treatment] Five types of strangury and bloody strangury: Mulong Tang uses Mulong, which is the wild grape vine. Combined with Zhuyuan sui, Danzhuye, Maidong (with roots and seedlings), Hongzaorou, Dengxincao, Wumei, and Danggui in equal parts, decocted as tea substitute. [Taste] Sweet. [Nature] Neutral. The root treats lower jiao heat pain, strangury, and reduces swelling/toxins (*Bencao Gangmu*). [Treatment] Root cures all swellings and toxins: Chilong San uses wild grape root, dried and powdered, mixed with water and applied topically to resolve swelling immediately. ○ Erysipelas (Chi You Feng): Sudden pain and itching, untreated can be fatal; apply mashed wild grape root to resolve swelling. [Combined Treatment] Heat strangury in men and women: Wild grape root 7 qian, Gegen 3 qian, decocted in one zhong of water until reduced to seven-tenths, add three parts of child urine, take warm on an empty stomach.
