The lamp-fire therapy is indicated for pediatric convulsive disorders (Xiao'er Jingfeng) manifesting as coma, spasms, and upward deviation of the eyes. For newborns whose vital qi is nearly exhausted due to exposure to wind-cold pathogenic factors, the umbilical cord should not be severed immediately; instead, wrap the infant quickly with warm cotton wadding. Alternatively, heat the placenta and use a lamp wick to cauterize back and forth below the umbilicus, allowing warmth to enter the abdomen; once the internal qi recovers, consciousness will naturally return. Furthermore, heating the handle of a copper spoon to moxibustion-like intensity on the inner eyelids can dispel wind and reduce redness, which is highly effective (*Bencao Gangmu*).
[Usage] For lamp therapies, only sesame oil (Huma You) or perilla seed oil (Suzi You) should be used for ignition, as these oils benefit vision and treat diseases.
[Treatment] (Li Shizhen stated) To treat cephalalgia and distending pain caused by wind-pathogen, observe the areas where the collateral vessels of the head, forehead, and temporal region are prominent. Dip a rush pith (Dengxin Cao) in sesame oil, light it, and quick-cauterize the affected area for good effect. This method is also suitable for painful swelling of external hemorrhoids. (*Ji Ji Fang*) Treats "intestine-stirring sand" pain (Jiaochang Sha), Yin-Yang abdominal pain, cold extremities, accompanied by red spots on the body: cauterize the red spots with an oil-soaked rush pith lamp. (*Xiao'er Jingfeng Mijue*) Treats various forms of pediatric convulsions: If the infant falls backward while supine, cauterize the fontanelle and the areas above and below the eyebrows; if the eyes roll up and cannot look down, cauterize the areas above and below the umbilicus; if unconscious, cauterize the palms, soles, and the areas above and below the heart center; if fists are clenched and unopen, cauterize the vertex of the head; if the mouth is puckered with white foam exuding from both hands and mouth, cauterize the areas above and below the mouth and the palms/soles. (*Ji Ji Fang*) Treats insect bites by fumigating the wound with lamp fire until fluid emerges, which is miraculous.
[Combined Treatment] (*Fang Guang Xinfa Fuyu*) Treats yaws (Yangmei Du Chuang). Use lead-mercury cinnabar (Qian Gong Jie Sha), vermilion (Yinzhu) each 2 qian, and dry snake (Baihua She) 1 qian. Grind into powder and form seven paper twists. On the first day, use three twists; thereafter, decrease by one twist daily. Ignite with sesame oil in a warming stove. Have the patient lie under blankets without letting wind penetrate. The patient must eat a full meal and hold pepper-tea in the mouth; when hot, spit it out and replace it. (*Shen Deng Xun Fa*) Use vermilion 2 qian, child's tea (Haier Cha), Longgua incense, and soap nut (Zaojiao Zi) each 1 qian. Grind into powder, roll into paper wicks like rush pith, 3 cun long. Place one wick in a lamp dish, soak with sesame oil, ignite, and place near a bucket of water. Sit surrounded by blankets, inhale the smoke through the nose and swallow it, while holding cold tea in the mouth; spit out when hot. Fumigate twice daily. After three days, if oral mucosa ulcerates, rinse with aged soy sauce water. (*Shen Deng Zhao Fa*) Treats chronic, ulcerated, and pitted yaws. Use vermilion, zinc oxide (Shuifen), and incense stick (Xianxiang) each 3 qian, frankincense (Ruxiang) and myrrh (Moyao) each 5 fen, and borneol (Pian Nao) 2 fen. Grind into powder, make paper twists, soak in oil, ignite, and shine the light onto the lesions three times daily. Efficacy appears within seven days. Prior administration of Tongsheng San for several doses is required. Hold pepper-tea temporarily to prevent toxic vapors from damaging the teeth. (*Ji Yuan Fang*) Treats chronic tinea corporis (Nianshen Jiexuan) spreading over the body. Mix sulfur (Liu Huang) and mugwort leaves (Aiyè) evenly, make twists, soak in oil, ignite, and fumigate inside blankets. Apply oil to the mouth, nose, ears, and eyes, leaving them exposed.
[Contraindications] (Li Shizhen stated) Oils from fish, poultry, beasts, rapeseed, cottonseed, tung, soybean, and naphtha (Shinao), as well as smoke from all lamps, damage the eyes and do not treat diseases.
[Explanation] Oils dispel wind and resolve toxicity; fire unblocks the meridians. Hence, the efficacy.
