Non-toxic. Grows among stones.
Agate (Manao): Primarily used to ward off evil and for hot compresses on red, ulcerated eyes (red, rotten eyes). [Recorded by Famous Physicians] 【Origin】 *Tu Jing Ben Cao* records: Sourced from jade mines in the Western Regions, red in color resembling a horse's brain, it is also a type of beautiful stone, considered a precious treasure. Today, China values it for making vessels. (Chen Cangqi states) It originates from Japan; those that do not heat up when rubbed against wood are superior grade, while those that heat up are not genuine. (*Yan Yi Ben Cao* states) Agate is neither stone nor jade, but a distinct category. It comes in red, white, and black varieties, with patterns like twisted silk. Those from the Western Regions are best. Locals carve small pieces into ornaments and large pieces into vessels. It is frequently used in ancient and modern prescriptions. 【Collection】 Available at any time. 【Usage】 The variety that does not heat up when rubbed against wood is preferred. 【Texture】 Resembles jade but has patterns and colors. 【Color】 Red, white. 【Taste】 Pungent. 【Nature】 Cold. 【Qi Property】 Thin Qi, Yin within Yang.
Soil from the three pushes of the plow during the Emperor's borrowed field ceremony: Non-toxic. Primarily treats palpitations, manic epilepsy, calms the spirit and stabilizes the soul, strengthens willpower, aids in official promotion, removes fear of meeting high officials, is suitable for marriage and trade, and is sealed by kings. Among the Five Colored Soils, ordinary soil ranks second. For previously mentioned ailments, take orally with water; otherwise, store as treasures. ○ Soil from the four corners of the She Tan (Altar of Land and Grain): Local officials take this upon assuming office to smear on doors, preventing thieves from entering the territory. She Tans exist in counties today. ○ Soil before the Earth God altar: Mainly absorbs toxins from all things. For patients suffering from back carbuncle (back abscess), dig a hole in the ground with one side open, introduce wind, and have the patient lie supine over the hole sized to the swelling, allowing the abscess to enter the hole for suction. Create three to five such holes; replace them when they feel hot, covering other areas with objects. Another case: For sudden acute jaundice with extreme heat threatening death, dig a pit in sandy soil, bury the patient diagonally with the head exposed above ground, pour water over them, and remove after some time. This has been tested effective, likely because soil can absorb heat. Also, for patients with Dan Shi (mineral pill toxicity) causing swelling, lie the swollen area on wet ground for hot compresses, replacing the ground when it heats up. ○ Soil at market gates: Non-toxic. Mainly facilitates easy childbirth for women. Carry this soil near term. At the time of delivery, take one qian bi (a measure of powder) mixed with wine. It can also be formed into pills for children to hold in a bitter gourd, called "White Dragon." This method comes from Cui Zhiti's prescription, which is largely not recorded here. ○ Natural Ash: Mainly treats vitiligo and severe skin ulcers with discharge. Mix juice with vinegar, first wipe the vitiligo area with cloth until broken, then apply. It may form a wound, do not be surprised. It can soften glass and jade like mud, making them easy to carve, and whitens clothes. It treats malignant sores and scabies, proving more effective than other ashes. It grows in the sea, resembling yellow earth. *Nan Zhong Yi Wu Zhi* states natural ash grows on the coast of the South Sea, can whiten stone clothes, and makes stone rot to form vessels. Today, hard materials like agate are buried in this ash to soften them before carving. ○ Yellow earth from casting bells: Non-toxic. Mainly treats sudden heart pain, zhu-wu (wandering pestilence), and evil qi. Warm in wine and drink; this is better. ○ Soil under door thresholds: Non-toxic. Mainly treats postpartum abdominal pain. Take one qian bi of powder, heat in wine, and drink. "Hu" is another name for door. New annotations state: Mix with male sparrow feces, warm wine, take one cun bi, effective for treating breast inflammation (blowing milk). ○ Yellow earth from cast plowshare/hoes: Mainly treats dampness and itching of the male scrotum. Apply fine powder; it is also the best method to remove genital sweat. ○ White ash inside porcelain jars: Mainly treats migratory swelling. Grind with vinegar and apply. Porcelain items are initially separated by ash acting as mud, then fired to become porcelain. Collect if found inside. ○ Soil from bullet-shaped containers: Non-toxic. Mainly treats difficult labor. Take one qian bi of powder, mix with hot wine, highly effective. ○ Soil taken from celestial bodies on specific days: Mix with cypress leaves and mugwort, smear on a one-foot square area of doors to prevent thieves. *Baopuzi* also mentions this. ○ Steamed soil from large steamers: One liang or shuo, hot. Sit or lie on it until the affected area feels hot and sweating covers the body. Continue taking medicine for the disease; mixing with rat burrow soil is also acceptable. ○ Soil from mole hills: Mix with vinegar to make mud, apply to swellings, extremely effective. Also for ghost-zhu qi pain, take soil, mix with millet sweet juice to make cakes, heat them, wrap in cloth, and hot compress the painful area. Moles are sharp-snouted rats in wild fields. ○ Soil and bricks/tiles from tombs: Mainly treats epidemic fevers. Collect on May 1st, store in earthenware vessels, bury under steps outside the door; the whole family will not suffer from seasonal qi. Also, early in January, go to the tomb head, take an ancient brick, chant incantations to break epidemics for a year, and hang it securely at the main gate. ○ Soil under mulberry roots: Form into mud cakes, apply to wind swellings, still moxa 30-20 times, seeking heat to open the sore. Also, for sudden evil wind-water flesh swelling curing one lesion, moxa with an earthen bowl 200 times, expect yellow fluid discharge, then it heals. ○ Soil from cow horns in spring: Store above doors, benefiting farming. ○ Fine soil from earth bee nests: Mainly treats toxic swellings, mix with vinegar to make mud, apply; also treats spider bites. Earth bees build nests in the ground. ○ Soil from cow horns of salt-carrying carts: Mainly treats malignant sores with persistent yellow discharge and gradual ulceration. Seal with soil to stop it. The horn refers to the grease horn on the cart side. Good to use. ○ Mud from donkey urine: Mainly treats spider bites. First wash the sore with vinegar and rice water, then apply mud; black donkey mud is better; floating juice wash is even better. ○ Soil from old shoe soles: For people traveling to new places experiencing maladaptation to local water and soil, scrape powder, mix with water, and drink. Maladaptation to water and soil differs from other diseases, presenting its own symptoms.
