Non-toxic. Grows on land (Li Sheng).
Zhilì (Shifa, a moss-like plant growing on stones in water) treats severe cold in the heart and abdomen, warms the middle jiao, aids digestion, strengthens stomach qi, and stops diarrhea and dysentery. (Recorded by Famous Physicians) [Name] Shifa. [Seedling] ("Tujing" states) Zhili is Shifa, which grows on stones in water like hair, with a greenish-yellow color, coarser and rougher than moss. The ancients used it to make paper, called "moss paper"; made into dried meat products, called "moss jerky," which is presumably edible. ("Bielu" states) Those growing on water stones are named Zhili, while those floating on the water surface are aquatic moss. Both are produced in water, but aquatic moss is cold in nature, whereas Zhili is sweet and warm; this is their difference. [Location] ("Tujing" states) Produced in ponds and marshes of Jiangnan. [Time] (Growth) Grows in spring. (Harvest) Any time. [Preservation] Dried in shade. [Usage] Moss growing on stones in water is preferred. [Quality] Similar to aquatic moss. (Therapy) ("Tujing" states) Treats deficiency-cold dysentery. ("Yanyi" states) Stops thirst-related diseases. [Contraindication] Salt.
Non-toxic. Aquatic.
Dried aquatic moss (Gantai) treats hemorrhoids, kills parasites, and stops persistent vomiting due to cholera when decocted as juice. For cases of mental and abdominal restlessness, grinding it into a paste with cold water and drinking it brings immediate relief. It also treats various sores and scabies; applying it into holes in wood infested by any kind of "Dan Shi" (mineral/stone toxicity) from marine creatures can kill them. It kills wood-boring insects when inserted into wood holes. Any Dan Shi toxicity derived from marine life can be neutralized by this. (Recorded by Famous Physicians) [Location] Grows in the sea. [Time] (Growth) Grows in spring. (Harvest) Any time. [Preservation] Sun-dried. [Usage] Moss. [Color] Green. [Flavor] Salty. [Nature] Cold, though some say it is warm. [Qi] Aroma and flavor are strong, belonging to Yin. [Odor] Fishy. [Prohibition] Excessive consumption causes emaciation, yellowing of the skin, and reduced blood color. [Antidote] Resolves toxicity of various medicines.
Non-toxic. Aquatic.
Fu Kui (Water Shield / Brasenia schreberi) treats diabetes mellitus (Xiao Ke), clears heat, relieves strangury, and promotes urination. [Seedling] ("Tujing" states) This plant has white stems and purple-red leaves, with a diameter of over one cun, floating on the water surface, with roots at the bottom, thick as a hairpin shaft, green above and white below. People in Jiangdong eat it, but it is rarely used in medical prescriptions. [Location] (Leaf) [Quality] Round in shape. [Color] White stem, purple-red leaves. [Flavor] Sweet. [Nature] Cold and mild.
