[Pea]
Non-toxic. Vining growth habit.
Pisum sativum (Wando Dou) mainly functions to harmonize Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive qi), benefit the Middle Jiao, and regulate Qi (from *Shaoxing Bencao*).
[Name] Handou (Cold Bean).
[Seedling] According to records: This plant grows by trailing vines; flowers are greenish-red; pods are over one cun long. The seeds come in white and black varieties, resembling paulownia seeds but slightly smaller and rounder. They ripen in the fourth and fifth lunar months. People in the South call them Handou. In lean years, they can serve as a staple food substitute. People also make sauce from them. Recently, they are often soaked in water and ground to pass off as steamed flour. *Shaoxing Jiaoding Bencao* states: Also known as Faba bean (Candou), but it grows in clumps without vines. Leaves resemble those of *Sedum* (Shenhuo Cao) but are larger and sandy-green. Pods form in the third lunar month, sized like a human finger. The seeds are sweet and delicious; boiled and eaten, they are beneficial to humans.
[Green Mung Bean]
Non-toxic. Upright growth habit.
Vigna radiata (Qing Xiaodou) mainly clears heat in the Middle Jiao, relieves Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst syndrome), stops dysentery, and removes abdominal distension. For postpartum women with insufficient lactation, boiling and consuming three to five sheng will induce milk production (added now).
[Seedling] According to records: The seedlings, leaves, flowers, and seeds of this plant resemble those of Glycine max (Da Dou), except that the seeds are smaller and green.
[Origin] Found everywhere.
[Season] (Growth) Seedlings emerge in summer; (Harvest) Seeds are collected in autumn.
[Storage] Sun-dried.
[Medicinal Part] Seeds.
[Color] Green.
[Taste] Sweet.
[Nature] Cold.
[Aroma/Qi] Thin Qi, Yin within Yang.
[Odor] Fishy.
[Wine-Lees Bamboo Shoots]
Tastes of wine lees, salty, neutral, non-toxic. Mainly treats hiccups and rebellious Qi causing vomiting. For children, mix with a small amount of cow's milk and drink, or take a small amount alone. Ground externally, it treats Yang Feng (ulcerative wind/ringworm). This refers to the juice found in the nodes of bamboo shoots preserved in wine lees.
○ Spray the four walls of the house with Shejiu (wine remaining after sacrificing to the Earth God) to repel mosquitoes and insects. Put this wine into a child's mouth to encourage early speech. This is the wine left over from sacrifices to the Earth God.
○ Cook Pengcaozi (seeds of *Artemisia* species) for rice; it is indistinguishable from chaff and rice, eaten during lean years.
○ Hanshi Mai Ren Zhou (Cold Food Wheat Porridge) has slight toxicity. It mainly treats cough, drains excess heat, and harmonizes the Middle Jiao. Adding Xingren (Apricot Kernel) makes it better.
○ *Bielu* records: Treats Jiaolong disease (disease caused by mythical dragons/snakes). Hanshi Qiangxing (hard malt sugar) was used in the sixth year of Kaihuang. A person who ate celery in the first lunar month contracted this illness. Symptoms resembled epilepsy, with a cyan-yellow complexion. After taking Hanshi Qiangxing for two years, three times daily, two heads of Jiaolong were vomited out, serving as verification.
