[Da Fu Pi (Areca Peel)]
It has the effects of purging, descending Qi, unblocking, and promoting water metabolism.
Its pungent flavor disperses Lung Qi, and its warm nature harmonizes the Spleen. It descends Qi, promotes water metabolism, and unblocks the Large Intestine and Small Intestine.
It treats edema, Hong Kong foot (a condition characterized by swelling and pain in the feet), distension due to stagnation, phlegm obstruction in the chest/diaphragm, miasmic malaria, and cholera. It is contraindicated for those with Qi deficiency.
The seed resembles Areca Nut (Bing Lang). Its belly is large and shape flat (thus sharing similar functions with Areca Nut). When harvesting the peel, wash it with wine, then wash it again twice with Black Bean Decoction. Use after stir-frying until slightly charred (because doves often perch on this tree, so it must be cleaned thoroughly).
[Huai Shi (Sophora Fruit)]
Also known as Huai Jiao (Sophora Fruit).
It dispels wind-heat and cools the Large Intestine.
Bitter and cold, belonging to pure Yin. Enters the Qi level of the Liver Meridian. It disperses wind-heat, moistens Liver dryness, and cools the Large Intestine.
It treats irritability, wind-dizziness, hemorrhoidal bleeding, and Chang Feng (intestinal wind) with blood in stool. (Blood before stool is called external hemorrhoids; blood after stool is called internal hemorrhoids; flesh protruding from the anus is called Ju Zhi; a hole on the hemorrhoid is called Zhi Lou; parasites in the sore are called Chong Zhi. The general treatment principle uses Huai Jiao, Di Yu, and Sheng Di Huang to cool blood; Huang Qin, Huang Lian, Zhi Zi, and Huang Bo to clear heat; Fang Feng and Qin Jiao to dispel wind-dampness; Xiong Gui, Dang Shen, and Ren Shen to harmonize blood and generate blood; Zhi Qiao to widen the intestines; Sheng Ma to lift Qi. The treatment for Chang Feng is slightly similar, but one should not rely solely on cold/cool herbs; complementary tonifying agents are required to achieve success.) It also treats yin sores, damp itching, brightens the eyes and stops tearing (by clearing Liver heat, as tears are caused by Liver heat), strengthens teeth and darkens hair/beards (Collected in early October, soaked in ox gall, dried in shade for 100 days. Swallow one pill after meals to brighten eyes, nourish the brain, turn white hair black, and is especially suitable for Chang Feng and hemorrhoidal bleeding). It kills parasites (roots and bark can also be used to wash hemorrhoids) and causes abortion.
Remove single seeds and five-seeded pods. Crush them with a copper hammer, mix with cow's milk, and steam (Sophora trees are considered the essence of the Void Star).
Huai Hua (Sophora Flower) is bitter and cool, enters the Blood level of the Liver and Large Intestine meridians to cool blood (when blood is cooled, Yin naturally suffices). It treats red eyes due to wind-heat, dysentery with red and white discharge, five types of hemorrhoids, Chang Feng, hematemesis, metrorrhagia, and various bleeding disorders. (Spontaneous bleeding from the tongue like a thread is called Xue Nu; apply fried and powdered Huai Hua topically.) Aged material is superior.
[Ku Lian Zi (Melia Seed)]
Also known as Jin Ling Zi.
It drains damp-heat, treats hernia, and kills parasites.
Bitter and cold, with slight toxicity. It enters the Liver meridian to soothe tendons, guides heat from the Small Intestine and Bladder downward, thereby drawing Minister Fire from the Pericardium downward, and promotes urination.
It is an essential herb for treating hernia. It also treats heat mania and heat syncope due to Shang Han, abdominal pain, and heart pain. It kills three types of parasites and treats sores and scabies (Yi Jian Zhi records: In cases of Xiao Ke [wasting-thirst] where parasites consume body fluids, take root and bark, decoct strongly, add a little Musk, and ingest. After expelling the parasites, thirst will cease spontaneously.). It is contraindicated for those with Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold.
Material produced in Sichuan is of good quality. Steam with wine (using heat to utilize cold properties). Remove peel, take the flesh, remove the core. If using the core, crush it, boil in starch water for one fu shi (approx. 2 hours), then discard the flesh and use the core.
Hui Xiang (Fennel) serves as a guiding herb.
