[Mie Tuo Seng (Litharge)]
Heavy in nature, it calms fright and settles the spirit, resolves phlegm, and eliminates accumulations.
Pungent and salty, with slight toxicity. It forms by absorbing the qi of silver and lead. Its actions include sinking phlegm, calming fright, stopping bleeding, dispersing swelling, eliminating accumulations, killing parasites, treating sores and toxic swellings, healing frostbite (applied with tung oil), resolving fox odor (rubbed into the axillae with oil; alternatively, steamed bun split open, dusted with powder, and clamped under the armpit is also effective), and dyeing mustaches black. Those from silver mines are rare; currently used material is the dross from smelting silver. For medicinal use, boil for one fu period (12 hours).
[Cinnabar (Dan Sha)]
Heavy in nature, it anchors the heart, calms fright, and drains heat.
Its body is yang containing yin (contains yin mercury), taste is sweet and nature cool, color red belongs to fire (if taken and causes fright instead, it is because Li hexagram has emptiness in the center containing yin; if the taste is not bitter but sweet, it is because fire contains earth). It drains pathogenic heat from the Heart channel (the principal herb for the blood aspect of the Heart channel), anchors the heart, clears the liver, brightens the eyes, induces sweating (sweat is the fluid of the heart), calms fright, dispels wind, and wards off evil spirits (Hu Yu, a junior minister, suffered from nightmares. He met Investigator Hu Yongzhi, who said: "I used to suffer from this. A Daoist taught me to wear Ling Sha [spiritual cinnabar] and it was effective." So he untied the crimson pouch in his hair and gave it to him; that night, no more dreams). It detoxifies (suitable for fetal toxins and smallpox toxins), stops thirst, and calms the fetus (Bo Jiu Fang records: Boil 1 liang, grind fine, take with wine, can expel a dead fetus. Li Shizhen said: Combined with Yuan Zhi [Polygalae Radix], Long Gu [Fossilized Bones], etc., it nourishes Heart qi; combined with Dan Shen [Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix], Dang Gui [Angelicae Sinensis Radix], etc., it nourishes Heart blood; combined with Di Huang [Rehmanniae Radix], Gou Qi Zi [Lycii Fructus], etc., it nourishes the Kidney; combined with Hou Po [Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex], Chuan Jiao [Zanthoxyli Pericarpium], etc., it nourishes the Spleen; combined with Nan Xing [Arisaematis Rhizoma], Chuan Wu [Aconiti Radix], etc., it dispels wind. Excessive intake causes dementia). Cinnabar produced in Chenzhou, bright as arrowheads, is superior (named Jian Zhu Sha [Arrowhead Cinnabar]). Grind finely and process three times using the water levigation method (raw use is non-toxic; calcination makes it toxic; ingestion often causes death). It is incompatible with Magnetite (Ci Shi). It fears salt water. Avoid all blood products (Zheng Kangcheng annotated Zhou Li, listing Cinnabar, Realgar, Melanterite, Alum, and Magnetite as the Five Poisons, which ancients used to attack ulcers).
[Mercury (Shui Yin)]
Heavy in nature, externally used to kill parasites.
Pungent and cold, classified as Yin poison. Its function is specifically to kill parasites. Treats scabies, tinea, lice, and nits (nature is slippery and heavy, and penetrates flesh. Do not use on head sores, lest it enter the meridians and cause stiffness and spasm of sinews and bones), detoxifies gold, silver, copper, and tin (can kill metals of the five elements), induces abortion, and sterilizes. It is obtained by roasting Cinnabar. It fears Magnetite and Arsenic Trioxide (Pi Shuang). It coagulates when meeting Lead, and binds when meeting Sulfur; it crumbles when ground with jujube pulp and saliva. Scattered material on the ground can be collected using Sichuan pepper and tea powder.
