[Alkali]
Also known as alkali. It has the effects of purging, grinding away accumulations, and removing dirt.
Pungent, bitter, astringent, and warm in nature. It can digest food, grind away accumulations, remove dirt, and resolve phlegm. It treats regurgitation and dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing). For moles, warts, and skin tags: Mix equal parts with mineral ash, use ash from wheat straw, boil until dry, and grind into powder. Puncture the mole, apply three dots, and it will heal. It is used for leavening dough and washing clothes. The method of preparation involves selecting plants such as Polygonum arvense, soaking them, drying them in the sun, burning them to ash, and leaching the ash with original water. For every hundred jin of liquid, add two or three jin of flour powder, and it will solidify like stone.
[Chicken]
Belongs to the Xun trigram and the Wood element (therefore, it may stir up wind). The meat is sweet and warm; it tonifies deficiency and warms the middle jiao (Ri Hua said: Black female chickens tonify postpartum consumptive disease. Ma Yiqing said: Pregnant women should eat male chickens to obtain complete yang essence from heaven. Cui Xinggong said: Death during childbirth is often due to disturbances by wealthy families causing fright and confusion in the mother. One should dismiss people for quiet delivery, then cook male chicken juice thoroughly with japonica rice to make porridge for the mother, ensuring safety. Chicken juice is slippery and moistening; without eating the meat, digestion may be difficult. Secular families often consume chicken and eggs immediately after childbirth; strong individuals may escape harm, but weak ones may fall ill. Gong Yunlin said: Four-to-five-year-old old hens, cooked in soup and eaten as porridge, can secure the fetus).
The comb is located in a high and clear position; chicken blood is where essence gathers. Male chickens with red color belong to Yang. Therefore, it treats sudden evil and fright (using fresh hot blood to rinse the mouth, smear on the face, and blow into the nose is effective); since what belongs to heaven tends to move upward, it can be applied externally for facial paralysis (deviation of mouth and eyes). Old chickens are used because they possess sufficient yang qi. Chickens can eat various insects; therefore, they treat poisoning from centipede, earthworm, and spider bites.
Egg is sweet and neutral. It calms the heart and spirit, harmonizes the five zang organs, benefits qi and nourishes blood, clears the throat and restores voice, dissipates heat and settles fright, stops cough and diarrhea (boiled with vinegar to treat chronic bloody and white dysentery), facilitates childbirth and secures the fetus (for retained placenta, swallow two or three egg yolks; if hair splinters cause throat irritation, inducing vomiting will expel the placenta). Excessive consumption causes stagnation and fullness.
Chick hatching shell, finely ground and mixed with sesame oil, is highly effective when applied externally for toxic pox.
Gizzard lining (also known as Ji Nei Jin, or Ji Zhen Pi, pronounced "Pi Chi"), sweet, neutral, and astringent. It is the spleen of the chicken. It digests food and water, clears heat and relieves irritability, and unblocks the small intestine and bladder. It treats diarrhea and frequent urination, enuresis and hematuria, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea with intestinal wind, chest obstruction and regurgitation, and pediatric food-stagnation malaria. Males use the gizzard lining from female chickens; females use that from male chickens.
Ji Shi Li (Chicken Manure Wine) is slightly cold. It directs qi downward, resolves accumulations, and promotes urination and defecation. The *Neijing* uses it to treat abdominal distension (collect white part of male chicken manure in the twelfth lunar month. Mix with vinegar to apply for earthworm and centipede bites; stir-fry with rice to treat rice disorder).
