Dispersing, eliminating cold-dampness.
Bitter to dry dampness, pungent to disperse wind. Clears heat from the intestines and stomach, benefits Qi of the Liver and Gallbladder, nourishes blood to moisten sinews (a moistening agent among wind-dispelling herbs, a tonifying agent among dispersing herbs).
Treats Wind-Cold-Damp Bi syndrome (The Classic says: The three pathogens of Wind, Cold, and Dampness mix together to form Bi. Predominance of Wind leads to Moving Bi; predominance of Cold leads to Painful Bi; predominance of Dampness leads to Fixed Bi. If Bi is in the bones, body weight increases; if in the vessels, blood flow becomes stagnant; if in the sinews, there is spasmodic contraction; if in the flesh, there is numbness; if in the skin, there is cold sensation), general muscle spasms (due to blood failing to nourish the sinews), deficiency consumption with bone-steaming fever (Li Shizhen said: This herb enters the Hand and Foot Yangming meridians and also the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. Dampness in the Yangming meridian causes soreness, pain, and alternating chills and fever in the limbs; heat causes tidal fever at the You hour (3-5 PM) and bone-steaming sensation. *Shenghui Fang* treats acute consumption with vexation and heat using *Qinjiao* (Gentianae Radix et Rhizoma) and *Chaihu* (Bupleuri Radix) each 1 liang, and *Gancao* (Licorice Root) 5 qian, ground into powder, taken 3 qian per dose. To treat pediatric bone-steaming tidal fever, reduced appetite, emaciation, and weakness, use *Qinjiao* and honey-fried *Gancao* each 1 liang, taken 1-2 qian per dose; Qian Yi added 5 qian of *Bohe* (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) to this formula), jaundice, alcohol toxicity, intestinal wind with bloody stool, trismus and toothache (the lower gums belong to the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian. Zhang Jiegu said: *Qinjiao* can relieve lower toothache and rheumatic conditions of this meridian). Conditions of dampness predominance and wind excess, promotes urination and defecation (taken with cow's milk, also treats jaundice, vexation, thirst, and red urine).
The shape resembles intersecting rosette patterns; those that are large, yellowish-white, with left-twisting veins are of good quality. *Changpu* (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) serves as an guiding herb; it fears cow's milk.
Dispersing, eliminating wind-dampness.
Bitter and pungent. Raw nature is cold, processed nature is warm.
Treats wind pathogen affecting the Liver and Kidney, causing limb paralysis, cold pain in sinews and bones, weakness in waist and knees, and wind-damp sores/ulcers. If Bi pain is caused by Spleen and Kidney deficiency and insufficient Yin-blood, rather than by wind-dampness, it is contraindicated (wind-dispelling herbs can dry out blood).
People in Jiangdong call the pig "Xi"; this herb smells like a pig, hence the name (Cheng Ne of the Tang Dynasty presented a memorial on Xi. Zhang Yong of the Song Dynasty presented a memorial saying: This herb has golden edges and silver lines, white stems with purple leaves, grows in opposite nodes, resembling *Cang'er* (Xanthii Fructus). After consuming it 100 times, my eyes and vision became clear; after 1000 times, my hair and beard turned black, and my sinews and strength became light and robust, with many verified effects). Harvested on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, 6th day of the 6th month, 7th day of the 7th month, and 9th day of the 9th month is especially good. Remove coarse stems, retain leaves, branches, flowers, and fruits; stir-fry with wine, steam, and sun-dry nine times, then make honey pills, which greatly benefits Yuan Qi (*Xi* is bitter, pungent, and cold in nature, so it must be steamed and dried nine times with wine and honey; this removes all bitter-cold turbid yin qualities, revealing its clear fragrance and delicious taste. If not done nine times, the turbid yin is not fully removed, and it cannot penetrate the bones to search for wind and dispel disease). Crush to extract juice or boil into paste; combine with paste made from decocting *Gancao* (Licorice Root) and *Shengdi* (Rehmanniae Radix), gather them with refined honey, and take mixed with wine for best results.
