Clearing the irritant heat in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), cooling blood.
Sweet and slightly cold. Relieves stagnation of the Spleen Earth, clears dryness of the Lung Metal, cools blood and removes heat. Treats irritant heat in the Upper Jiao (Bamboo skin enters the Lung meridian, governing the Upper Jiao; used in Wendan Tang [Warm Gallbladder Decoction]), regulates chills and fever due to cold qi, dysphagia and vomiting/retrograde flow (due to Stomach heat), hematemesis [vomiting blood] and epistaxis [nosebleed] (clears Lung and cools Stomach; for persistent dental bleeding, soak in vinegar and hold in mouth), pulmonary atrophy [Fei Wei] and convulsions/epilepsy (disperses Liver fire), metrorrhagia [heavy uterine bleeding] and fetal restlessness (cools and calms fetal qi).
Clearing irritant heat in the Upper Jiao.
Pungent, bland, sweet, and cold. Cools the Heart and warms the Spleen, eliminates phlegm and relieves thirst. Removes wind-pathogens and irritant heat from the Upper Jiao (Bamboo leaves grow on bamboo branches, thus treating Upper Jiao conditions; Zhang Zhongjing used Zhuye Shigao Tang [Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction] to treat febrile disease with fever and intense thirst. This utilizes its pungent-cold nature to dissipate pathogenic heat in the Yangming channel). Treats cough with retrograde flow, panting and shortness of breath, vomiting/hiccuping and hematemesis, stroke with aphonia, and pediatric convulsions/epilepsy. Bamboo that has grown for more than one year is tender and potent.
Clearing heat, resolving phlegm, cooling the Heart.
Sweet and slightly cold. Cools the Heart meridian, dispels wind-heat, benefits orifices and resolves phlegm, pacifies the Liver and brightens the eyes. Its efficacy is similar to Zhulü [Bamboo Sap], but its nature is mild and gentle, without the adverse effect of being cold and slippery. Particularly suitable for treating adult stroke with aphasia and pediatric external fright with convulsions/epilepsy. Originates from the South Sea. It is formed by the condensation of the sap and qi within large bamboo (i.e., yellow powder inside bamboo); pieces resembling bamboo nodes are authentic.
Purging, eliminating accumulation, killing parasites.
Bitter and cold, slightly toxic. Enters the Stomach and Large Intestine meridians. Its function specializes in eliminating accumulation and killing parasites (Yang De suffered from a strange illness; whenever he spoke, a small voice responded from his abdomen, which gradually grew louder over time. A Daoist priest said: "This is an echo-response worm. Simply recite the Materia Medica and use the herb that does not elicit a response." Upon reading Leiwan [Albizziae Cortex/Frugus], there was no response, and he recovered after taking it). It is the residual qi of bamboo, born from thunder/lightning, hence the name. Size like a chestnut; scrape off the black skin with a bamboo knife. Soak overnight in licorice water, mix with wine and steam, or process by stir-frying. Use with Houpo [Magnolia Bark] and Yuanhua [Genkwa Flos] as guiding herbs. Adversely affected by Gegen [Pueraria Root].
Also known as Xihe Liu [Tamarix Twig/Branch].
Dispersing, detoxifying.
Enables rash toxins to emerge outward. Take four qian [approx. 12-15g] as powder; treats scarlet fever/rash that fails to erupt, accompanied by panting, cough, chest oppression, and confusion. Mix with rock sugar and take orally; treats dysentery following the eruption of rashes.
