[He Ye (Lotus Leaf)]
Nature is light, dispersing, and ascending; it raises Yang Qi and dissipates blood stasis.
Bitter, neutral in temperature. Its color is green, its shape faces upward, its center is hollow, corresponding to the Zhen hexagram (Zhen represents an inverted bowl), resonating with the Qi of Shaoyang Gallbladder channel. When combined with cooked rice for medicinal preparation, it assists the Spleen and Stomach to ascend and generate Yang Qi (e.g., Jiegu Zhizhu Wan uses lotus leaf cooked with rice as a binder); for collapsed acneiform eruptions, this herb promotes their eruption (equal parts of Bombyx Batryticatus powder taken with Coriander decoction. Wenren Gui stated: its efficacy surpasses that of Human Tooth and Dragon Brain/Borneol). It can dissipate blood stasis while preserving healthy blood. It treats hematemesis, epistaxis, metrorrhagia, stranguria, trauma-induced blood stasis, and postpartum blood stasis (taken after being fried until fragrant and powdered); all kinds of bleeding disorders; externally used to wash perineal wind (Li Dongyuan stated: Lei Tou Feng syndrome presents with swollen, painful nodules on the head and face, aversion to cold and heat, resembling Taiyang disease, located in the three Yang channels. Cold medicines should not be overused in heavy doses to avoid punishing the innocent. The prescription Qing Zhen Tang is used: one He Ye, Sheng Ma and Cang Zhu each 5 qian, decocted and taken. Zheng Dianyi stated: He Ye powdered and taken with wine at 3 qian is extremely effective for seminal emission).
[Qian Shi (Euryale Seed)]
Also known as Ji Tou Zi.
Functions: Tonify the Spleen, astringe essence.
Sweet, astringent in taste. It consolidates the Kidney, benefits essence, tonifies the Spleen, and removes dampness. It treats diarrhea, turbid leukorrhea, urinary incontinence, nocturnal emission, and spermatorrhea (combined with Jin Ying paste into pills, named Shui Lu Er Xian Dan); stasis pain in the lower back and knees (Wu Ziye stated: when eating Qian Shi, one must bite each piece and chew it thoroughly so that fluids circulate and irrigate internally, its merit surpassing that of Ruxi [milk stone]. Jing Yan Hou Fang records: boiled, mashed into paste, and cooked with Oryza sativa var. japonica rice into porridge to benefit essence and qi). Used steamed and mashed into powder; for astringent formulas for essence, sometimes the shell is included (Li Weixi stated: Ling Jiao is cold while Qian Shi is warm; Ling Hua faces away from the sun, while Qian Hua faces the sun).
[Zhe Gan (Sugarcane)]
Functions: Tonify the Spleen, moisten dryness.
Sweet, cold in temperature. It harmonizes the middle, aids the Spleen, clears heat, moistens dryness, and relieves thirst (treating Xiao Ke [wasting-thirst]); resolves phlegm, detoxifies alcohol, and promotes urination and defecation (Wai Tai Mi Yao Fang records: chewing or juicing to treat fever, dry mouth, and difficult defecation). Treats vomiting, hiccups, and regurgitation (Mei Shi Fang records: mixing Sugarcane juice with Ginger juice and taking orally); dry stool constipation (Sugarcane juice boiled down, named Shi Mi, i.e., white frost sugar. During the Dali era of the Tang Dynasty, Monk Zou first transmitted the production method. Its nature is sweet and warm, tonifying the Spleen, softening the Liver, moistening the Lungs, harmonizing the middle, resolving phlegm, and treating cough. However, excessive consumption generates heat, damages teeth, and causes worms. Zi Sha Tang [brown sugar] has similar functions).
