Raw *Puhuang* (Typhae Pollen) has the effect of lubricating blood circulation and removing stasis, while stir-baked until blackened, it becomes astringent to stop bleeding.
Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. It enters the Jueyin (Pericardium and Liver) blood level. When used raw, its nature is slippery; it promotes blood circulation, eliminates stasis, unblocks meridians, facilitates urination, and dispels cold and heat from the Heart, abdomen, and Bladder (when combined with *Wulingzhi* [Trogopterori Faeces], it treats epigastric and abdominal blood-qi pain, known as *Shixiao San* [Laughing Powder]).
It treats traumatic injuries from falls and blows, and various swellings from sores and carbuncles (A woman had her tongue swollen filling her mouth; by frequently sprinkling *Puhuang* powder, she recovered by dawn. Emperor Duzong of Song also suffered from tongue swelling filling his mouth; the imperial physician treated him by applying equal parts of *Puhuang* and dried *Ganjiang* [Zingiberis Rhizoma] powder, resulting in recovery. Li Shizhen said: From these cases, one can understand that *Puhuang* has cooling blood and activating blood properties. Since the tongue is the sprout of the Heart, and the Pericardium governs Ministerial Fire, this acts as its minister and envoy; obtaining *Ganjiang* represents the mutual assistance of Yin and Yang).
When stir-baked until blackened, its nature becomes astringent, stopping all types of bleeding, such as metrorrhagia, leukorrhea, and seminal emission.
The pollen dust from the catkins of *Xiangpu* (Typha orientalis), added to decoctions after they are finished cooking.
Used raw to break blood, roasted to stop bleeding.
When used raw, pungent in taste and neutral in nature, it breaks blood and unblocks menstruation, treating masses (Zhengjia), strangury, and accumulation. When roasted, pungent in taste and warm in nature, it stops bleeding, treating intestinal wind and rectal prolapse.
It grows on rocks, curled like a chicken's foot, commonly called "Ten-Thousand-Year Pine." For preparation, boil in salt water for half a day, then in well water for half a day, and dry-roast before use.
Draining method, breaking blood.
Pungent, cold in nature, slightly toxic. It corrodes foul flesh, discharges pus and blood, kills scabies mites, clears heat-bi syndrome, and breaks masses (In *Neijing*, it is used with *Wuzeigu* [Sepiae Endoconcha] to treat female blood exhaustion).
The root resembles radish, with yellow skin and white flesh; leaves are long and slightly broad; when broken, juice exudes; fruits resemble beans, typically three per cluster. *Gancao* [Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma] serves as the guiding herb.
Draining method, promoting water metabolism, dispersing blood.
Bitter and pungent, slightly cold in nature (*Bencao Jing Jiuwen* records it as slightly warm). Enters the Liver meridian blood level. Promotes water metabolism and disperses blood, with dispersing action containing tonifying properties.
Treats impotence, scanty or obstructed menstruation, heaviness and pain in the waist, knees, and joints, postpartum blood-qi pain, and sprains or fractures (frequently used in formulas for traumatic injuries). It can subdue snakes (snakes rot upon contact).
Leaves resemble chrysanthemum but are thinner; stems resemble mugwort but are thicker. *Yiyiren* [Coicis Semen] serves as the guiding herb.
Dispersing, promoting Qi flow and resolving depression; Draining, venting blood and breaking stasis.
Pungent and bitter, cold in nature. A pure Yang substance, its nature is light, ascending, and upward-moving. It enters the Heart and Pericardium meridians, and concurrently the Lung meridian. Clears Heart heat, dissipates Liver depression, descends Qi, and breaks blood (moves stagnant Qi without damaging healthy Qi; breaks stasis yet generates new blood).
Treats hematemesis, epistaxis, hematuria, and retrograde menstruation in women (when menstruation does not descend but flows upward causing hematemesis and other symptoms, use *Yujin* [Curcumae Radix] powder mixed with leek juice, ginger juice, and children's urine; the blood will clear naturally. For blood in phlegm, add *Zhuli* [Bambusae Caulis in Taenia]). Treats various pains due to blood and Qi disorders, postpartum failed blood attacking the Heart, mania and insanity losing the mind (Mania involves excessive laughter and fear, indicating deficiency; delirium involves anger and uncontrollability, indicating excess. This disease is often caused by shock, worry, and blood stasis blocking the Heart orifices. Use seven taels of *Yujin* and three taels of *Baifan* [Alumen], formed into pills with rice paste, named *Baijin Wan* [White Gold Pill]. *Yujin* enters the Heart to dissipate foul blood, while alum resolves stubborn phlegm). Treats toxin from smallpox entering the Heart (one tael of *Yujin*, two qian and half of *Gancao*, boiled until dry, roasted and powdered, mixed with five fen of *Bingpian* [Borneolum Syntheticum]; take one qian each time, taken down with new well water and five to seven drops of pig's blood. Treats early-stage smallpox where white blisters suddenly convulse inward, turning purple-black without pus). Expels gu poison (taken with *Shengma* [Cimicifugae Rhizoma]; if vomiting does not occur, it is expelled via defecation).
Produced in Sichuan and Guang regions. The body is sharp and round like a cicada's belly, yellow outside and red inside, fresh in color, slightly fragrant, with a bitter taste accompanied by sweetness indicates authenticity (Market vendors often counterfeit it with *Jianghuang* [Curcumae Longae Rhizoma]).
