[Tianzhu Huang (Calculus Bambusae)]
[Harm] The nature is cold and cool; prolonged use can also damage the middle jiao (Middle Burner) yang.
[Efficacy] Sweet and cold, enters the Heart Meridian. It dispels wind-phlegm, resolves wind-heat, calms the Heart and Liver, stabilizes the Five Viscera, drains heat, expels phlegm, opens orifices, and nourishes the Heart. It treats adults with stroke-induced aphasia (inability to speak), and children with fright epilepsy or convulsions due to external pathogens. Its aroma and efficacy are similar to Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) but its nature is slightly milder, without the harm of being cold and slippery.
[Preparation] Grows in Yong bamboo from the South Sea. This substance forms inside the bamboo, resembling yellow earth adhering to the bamboo in sheets, with sheet-like structures resembling bamboo nodes being authentic. This bamboo is extremely large, also known as Tianzhu. It is formed by the condensation of sap and qi, containing a yellow hue. Writing it as "Tianzhu" in materia medica texts is incorrect. There is no fixed time for harvesting.
[Huang Dan (Lead Tetroxide)] (Also known as Qiandan)
[Harm] The nature and flavor are heavy and yin, capable of damaging yang. The therapeutic indications for Qianfen (Lead Carbonate) are roughly the same. Although internal administration can eliminate infantile malnutrition (Gan syndrome), drive out accumulation, and kill parasites, its nature is cold and agile/moving. Therefore, it should not be used by those with Spleen and Stomach deficiency, and pregnant women should also avoid it.
[Efficacy] Salty and cold. It calms the Heart and anchors the soul, drops phlegm, eliminates accumulation, and kills parasites. It treats fright-Gan syndrome, malaria, and dysentery. Externally applied, it resolves heat, draws out toxins, relieves pain, generates flesh, and promotes tissue growth. For uses involving drying dampness, dropping phlegm, and resolving heat, only external application is suitable.
[Preparation] Made by calcining black lead with saltpeter, realgar, salt, and alums. When preparing for use, wash it clean with water, stir-fry until purple, to remove fire toxicity.
[Xiangya (Elephant Ivory)]
[Harm] Extremely bitter and cold, detrimental to the Spleen and Stomach. Those suffering from Gan syndrome, Spleen weakness, eye diseases, or blood deficiency should not take it in large amounts.
[Efficacy] Sweet, bitter, and cool. It clears fire from the Heart and Kidney, treats wind-epilepsy, palpitations due to fright, bone-steaming heat, phlegm-heat sores and toxins. Shaved into powder and decocted for oral intake, its qi is mild and flavor balanced, causing no adverse effects on the Zang-Fu organs. If elephant meat becomes swollen, pricking it with a knife allows healing within half a day. To treat metal wounds that fail to heal, the ash of ivory skin can be used. Boiled into an ointment and added to powders, it is a crucial medicine for treating metal trauma, revered as a divine elixir for generating muscle. If iron or other foreign objects penetrate the flesh, scraping ivory shavings and applying them with water will cause the objects to emerge immediately. If various objects pierce the throat, grinding ivory into water and drinking it can also expel them.
[Preparation] Originates from Western Regions (Xifan). Elephants bury their shed teeth themselves. People from Kunlun regions secretly replace them with wooden teeth to obtain the ivory.
