(See Heart Section)
[Harm] This substance is purely Yin in nature; it is contraindicated for those with Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold.
[Benefit] Bitter and cold, it enters the Heart, Lung, Spleen, and Stomach meridians. It clears phlegm-heat and resolves heat, preventing blood stasis.
[Processing] Roots are harvested in autumn and winter, peeled, cut into inch-long segments, and soaked in water. The water is changed daily. After four to five days, they are taken out, pounded into a paste, filtered through silk gauze to extract the juice, and the settled starch is dried in the sun for use. Currently, only peeling, slicing, and drying in the sun is practiced.
[Harm] Extremely cold and bitter, it is detrimental to the Spleen and Stomach. It is highly unsuitable for those who are deficient, suffer from diarrhea, and have aversion to food. In conditions of Yin deficiency and essence depletion, health relies entirely on strong Spleen-Stomach Qi to accept and digest food, thereby nourishing essence and Qi. If the Spleen and Stomach are already compromised, the source of the Post-Heaven (acquired) foundation is cut off. Although pills may be excellent, they ultimately depend on food; although decoctions are wonderful, they ultimately belong to fluids. Furthermore, bitter-cold substances damage Stomach Qi, leading to diarrhea and aversion to food, which is perilous. If individuals with Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold take this herb alone for a long time, it will inevitably cause intestinal slipping and diarrhea, turning into a chronic disease. This is because the herb is cold and moistening, capable of lubricating the Large Intestine.
[Benefit] Sweet and cold, it protects the Lung, moistens dryness, tonifies the Kidney, and nourishes Yin. It is an essential herb for treating deficiency-heat of the Lung and Kidney.
[Processing] Roots are harvested in the second, third, seventh, and eighth months. They are steamed, peeled, split into four parts, and the heartwood is removed. They must be dried in the sun or baked over fire for use.
[Harm] Do not use in cases of interior-cold.
[Benefit] Sweet, bland, and cold, it cools blood and clears the Triple Burner, descends latent fire in the Lung, and eliminates deficiency-heat of the Liver and Kidney. It treats wind-pathogens that are uncertain in location on the exterior, and primarily addresses bone-steaming tidal fever with sweating associated with consumption disease (Chuan Shi). Regarding dispelling wind-pathogens: when the Liver has heat, wind generates internally; when heat subsides, wind ceases. This differs from externally contracted wind. People know it can reduce internal tidal fever (Nei Chao), but few know it can also reduce external tidal fever (Wai Chao). When a patient contracts wind-cold, and the pathogen is dispersed but not fully eliminated, resulting in alternating tidal fever, Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) and Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) cannot treat it. Only Di Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii), a herb that travels both to the exterior and interior, can eliminate these floating pathogens. Administration invariably leads to recovery. Therefore, Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) is often used as an assistant. Di Gu Pi has repeatedly demonstrated miraculous efficacy in reducing fever, relying entirely on supporting sufficient Essence and Qi, so that evil-fire retreats naturally. Why should one use bitter-cold herbs like Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), and Huang Bai (Phellodendri Cortex) to damage Yuan Qi?
Fresh Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex) juice: Treats hematemesis and hematuria.
Tian Jing Cao (Aerial Parts of Lycium chinense): Bitter, sweet, and cool. Clears exogenous pathogens in the Upper Jiao (Heart and Lung). Can be used as tea to alleviate Xiao Ke (wasting-thirst).
[Processing] Roots are harvested in winter; leaves, stems, and fruits are harvested in spring and summer. When using roots, after excavation, wash away soil by soaking and scrubbing with flowing water from the east. Pound to remove the heartwood. Soak in cooked Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) decoction overnight, then bake dry for use.
