[Contraindications] Those with easily aroused deficient Yang, continuous nocturnal emissions, dark urine, and dry mouth should avoid it. If taken mistakenly, it may cause complications such as priapism (strong middle/abnormal erection), stranguria, and turbid discharge.
[Efficacy] Pungent and warm; enters the Kidney meridian. Tonifies the Large Intestine and Sanjiao (Triple Burner), strengthens sinews and bones, restores impotence, promotes urination, and relieves pain in the penis.
[Preparation] Collect leaves and stems in the fifth lunar month and sun-dry them; roots are also usable. For every jin (approx. 500g) of herb, mix and stir-fry with four liang (approx. 125g) of sheep fat until fully absorbed.
Aliases include Xianlingpi (Fairy Spirit脾/Ephedra-like efficacy), Qianliangjin (Thousand Tael Gold), and Qizhangcao (Staff-Abandoning Grass), all highlighting its potent therapeutic effects.
(See the entry under Heart Tonification)
[Contraindications] The nature is cold and moistening. It is contraindicated for Yin deficiency cough, internal heat with bone-steaming fever, or conditions involving hematemesis (vomiting blood). It must be strictly avoided if there is Spleen deficiency with diarrhea, Stomach deficiency with poor appetite, morning diarrhea due to Kidney deficiency at dawn, postpartum diarrhea, or loose stools after childbirth. Even if fever is present in cases of postpartum aversion to food leading to diarrhea, or lochia retention causing pain, it should not be used; mistaken use will lead to unceasing diarrhea. In such cases, adding Paojiang (Prepared Ginger), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), and Renshen (Ginseng) will ensure recovery. Avoid iron/copper vessels, scallions, garlic, radishes, and various blood products, as they can deplete the Kidney, cause stagnation of Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, and lead to whitening of hair and beard.
[Efficacy] Sweet and cold; enters the Heart, Liver, Kidney, and Small Intestine meridians. Removes stasis and generates new blood, tonifies Yin, clears heat, cools blood, nourishes Yin, and subdues deficient Yang.
[Preparation] Collect roots in the second and eighth lunar months and sun-dry them. Roots from Huaiqing are superior: large, plump, short, glutinous texture, fine skin, and a chrysanthemum-heart pattern in the cross-section. Da Shengdi (Large Raw Rehmannia), also called Yuan Shengdi (Original Raw Rehmannia), is stronger than Xiao Shengdi (Small Raw Rehmannia), which has weaker efficacy.
Soaking in Ginger Juice prevents cloying the diaphragm; processing with Wine prevents damaging the Spleen.
[Contraindications] Same as Yinyanghuo (Epimedium). It is contraindicated for conditions where Minister Fire (Xiang Huo) is blazing, accompanied by unfulfilled desires, dark urine, bitter taste, blurred vision, eye pain, irritability, thirst, and dry constipation.
[Efficacy] Sweet and warm; enters the Kidney meridian. Calms the Five Zang organs and benefits Essence, strengthens sinews and bones, and restores genital function.
[Preparation] Collect roots in the second and eighth lunar months, remove the woody core, and shade-dry. Choose those that are bead-like, fleshy, and dense. Soak in wine overnight, slice, bake, and add to prescriptions.
