The taste is sour and cold, non-toxic. It treats alternating chills and fever, diarrhea and dysentery, leukorrhea (white discharge), genital erosion, malignant sores, eye pain, and strengthens bones and teeth. When refined and taken as an electuary, it lightens the body, prevents aging, and increases longevity.
(Alumen originally appeared in the valleys of Hexi and Shimen, Wudu, Longxi. Currently, it is produced in Yizhou, Jinzhou, Qingzhou, Cizhou, and Wuwei Zhou. It is also known as Huangshi, or Yuhuang, Yuze. There are five types of alums with different colors: white alum, yellow alum, green vitriol, black soapstone alum, and crimson alum. "Fanshi" refers to white alum, which is obtained by mining stones, crushing them, and refining them through boiling until they become bright and pure white; this is called Mingfan. Those that form into blocks, glossy and crystal-clear, are called Fanjing. The method of refining alums involves collecting hundreds of jin of stones, boiling them in water. The weight of the resulting alum does not decrease relative to the water used, indicating that the essence of the stone relies on water to form alum. Hence the names Yuhuang and Yuze. "Huangze" refers to water, and "Yu" means gathering, implying gathering water to form it.)
Fanshi is made by boiling stones in water; it is bright, heavy, sour, cold, and astringent. It inherits the essence of water and stone, capable of purifying turbid impurities. It treats alternating chills and fever, diarrhea, dysentery, and leukorrhea caused by either cold or heat pathogens. Fanshi clears and washes the intestines and stomach, thus treating these conditions. "Genital erosion and malignant sores" refer to conditions where excessive yin generates parasites, causing muscles to appear eroded. Fanshi's sour and astringent properties kill parasites, thus treating this. Boiling stones in water yields a bright substance with a cold nature, treating eye pain. Condensing into alum gives it a stone-like hardness, strengthening bones and teeth. Refined and taken as an electuary, it absorbs the essence of the stone, nourishing jing and qi, thereby lightening the body, preventing aging, and increasing longevity.
Shidan (Stalactite Vitriol / Copper Sulfate) has a sour, acrid, and cold taste, with slight toxicity. It brightens the eyes, treats eye pain, traumatic wounds from metal weapons (Jinchuang), various epilepsy and spasms, female genital erosion pain, lithiasis strangury (Shilin) with chills and fever, metrorrhagia and uterine bleeding (Bengzhong Xiexue), various pathogenic toxic vapors, and promotes fertility. Refined and taken as an electuary, it prevents aging. Long-term use increases lifespan, even achieving immortality.
(Shidan was named Heishi in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* and is commonly known as Danfan. It originally grew among large rocks in the valleys of Qiangdao, Qinchuan, or Qiangliju Green Mountains. Currently, it is found in Xinzhour Qianshan, Songyue, and Puzhou, growing in copper mines. It is mined and refined. Naturally occurring pieces are particularly precious. Large ones are fist-sized or egg-sized; small ones are peach- or chestnut-sized. They fracture纵横ly when struck. If heated and melts into liquid, it is fake. If applied to iron or copper and turns red when heated, it is genuine.)
Danfan tastes sour, acrid, and cold. Sour corresponds to Wood. Acrid corresponds to Metal. Cold corresponds to Water. It inherits the generative Qi transformation of Metal, Water, and Wood. Inheriting Water Qi, it brightens the eyes and treats eye pain. Inheriting Metal Qi, it treats Jinchuang and various epilepsy/spasms, meaning trauma exposed to wind transforms into epilepsy/spasms. Inheriting Wood Qi, it treats female genital erosion pain, meaning damp-earth causes ulceration, making the female genitalia feel like it is being gnawed by insects and painful. Metal generates Water, and Water generates Wood; thus, it treats Shilin with chills/fever, metrorrhagia, toxic vapors, and promotes fertility. Treating Shilin and bleeding reflects Metal generating Water. Treating toxic vapors and promoting fertility reflects Water generating Wood. Refined as an electuary for anti-aging and long-term use for longevity/immortality is due to absorbing the essence of the stone.
