Flavor: Acrid (Xin), slightly warm. Non-toxic. Indicated for improving vision.
(Firefly, known as "Ye Guang" in the *Shennong Bencao Jing* [Divine Farmer's Materia Medica], is described in the *Bielu* [Supplement to the Divine Farmer's Materia Medica] as growing on ground near steps, ponds, and marshes. It should be collected on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month and dried in the shade. There are three types of fireflies: one type transforms from the roots of thatch grass, corresponding to the saying in the *Lüshi Chunqiu·Yueling* [Monthly Ordinances of Master Lü]: "Decaying grass transforms into fireflies." Another type is long like a maggot, with light at the tail, wingless and unable to fly, transforming from bamboo roots; its name is "Juan," corresponding to the saying in the *Mingtang Yueling*: "Decaying grass transforms into Juan." The third type is the water firefly, which lives in water, as mentioned in Li Ziqing's *Ode to Water Fireflies* in the Tang Dynasty: "Why does some transform from grass, while others dwell in springs?" For medicinal use, the flying firefly is employed.)
Fireflies possess an acrid and warm flavor, inheriting the Qi of Water. As hosts of fire, they are named "Firefly," inheriting the Qi of Fire. They grow in the seventh month, when the Great Fire star moves westward; hence, their flavor is acrid and warm. The essence of Water and the spirit of Fire converge in the eyes; therefore, the *Shennong Bencao Jing* states it improves vision, while the *Bielu* adds that it unblocks spiritual clarity.
Flavor: Salty (Xian), warm. Non-toxic. Mainly treats women's hernia masses (Shenjia), difficulty in urination, and pediatric wind-stroke causing stiffness of the neck and back; applied externally via rubbing/massage.
(Clothes moth, also known as White Fish, is the same as the silverfish. It lives among clothes, silk, and book papers, hence the name "Clothes Moth." Its shape resembles a fish body covered with white powder, shining like silver, hence also called "White Fish." Folk legends claim that if clothes moths enter Daoist scriptures and eat characters of immortals, their bodies turn five-colored; humans who swallow them can become immortals. This is a fallacy by alchemists and should not be believed.)
The clothes moth is white and crushes like silver, inheriting the Qi of Metal. Named "Fish," with a salty and warm flavor, it inherits the Qi of Water. Since Water generates Wood, it treats women's hernia masses. Women's hernia masses are disorders of Liver Wood. Since Metal generates Water, it treats difficulty in urination. Difficulty in urination indicates impaired flow of Water. Children's meridians are not yet fully developed; if struck by Wind pathogens and left untreated for a long time, it leads to stiffness of the neck and back. This is a disorder of the Du Meridian (Governing Vessel), which combines with the Liver region and belongs to the Taiyang (Greater Yang) category. The clothes moth inherits the transformation of Metal and Water; therefore, it should be used for external rubbing/massage.
