Taste and nature: Sweet, neutral; non-toxic. Main indications: Dysentery (Dysentery), for patients over ten years old.
Taste and nature: Sweet, neutral; non-toxic. Main indications: Resolves alcohol intoxication (Record of Distinctive Records); treats intestinal wind with lower bleeding (Compendium of Materia Medica, appended).
Main indications: Golden wounds (Metal wounds), stops bleeding, applied externally (Record of Distinctive Records, appended).
Main indications: Sudden throat obstruction (Sudden Pharyngeal Obstruction), burned to powder, taken orally with water using a square-inch measure (Tang Materia Medica, appended).
Taste and nature: Bitter, warm; non-toxic. Main indications: Headache due to wind-stroke and cold damage, warm malaria, releases the exterior and induces sweating, eliminates pathogenic heat, stops coughing and rebellious Qi, removes cold and heat, breaks stasis, hardness, and accumulations.
(Mahuang [Ephedrae Herba] originally appeared in the Jin region; currently found in Yingyang, Zhongmou, Bianzhou, Pengcheng, and other places. In spring, shoots emerge, slender and strong, yellow outside and red inside, hollow with nodes, resembling bamboo, akin to hair follicles.)
Where Mahuang grows, snow does not accumulate in winter; it can reach Yang Qi from the Supreme Yin. Supreme Yin refers to abundant Water; Yang Qi refers to Taiyang. The Qi of Taiyang originates from the Cold Water of the Bladder, and its Qi circulates through the head and pervades the hair follicles of the entire body. Treating headache due to wind-stroke and cold damage means that when Wind-Cold pathogens affect the high exterior Qi of Taiyang, Mahuang can treat it. Releasing the exterior and inducing sweating to eliminate pathogenic heat in warm malaria means that since warm malaria resides in the Kidney, Mahuang can raise Water Qi to pervade the skin and hair, thus releasing the exterior, inducing sweating, and eliminating the pathogenic heat of warm malaria. Treating coughing and rebellious Qi means that when Wind-Cold pathogens block the hair follicles, interior Qi becomes stagnant, leading to coughing and rebellious Qi. Since Mahuang is hollow and fine like hair, it opens the hair follicles and disperses Wind-Cold, allowing interior Qi to exit to the skin and hair, thereby stopping coughing and rebellious Qi. Removing cold and heat, breaking stasis, hardness, and accumulations means that if external cold and heat are not removed, the Qi of Central Earth cannot reach the exterior, resulting in stasis, hardness, and accumulations. By removing external cold and heat, Mahuang allows Taiyang Qi to enter and exit Central Earth, causing stasis, hardness, and accumulations to break spontaneously.
Taste and nature: Acrid, warm; non-toxic. Main indications: Leukorrhea (red and white discharge) in women, blood closure, genital swelling, alternating cold and heat, wind affecting the head causing tearing, promotes muscle growth, moistens and brightens complexion, can be used as facial cream.
(Baizhi [Angelicae Dahuricae Radix] is found everywhere, especially abundant in Wu regions. Roots are over a chi long, varying in thickness, white in color and fragrant in odor.)
Baizhi has a fragrant odor and white color, with an acrid and warm taste, inheriting the Qi transformation of Yangming Metal and Earth. Treating leukorrhea (red and white discharge), blood closure, and genital swelling in women: The Classics state, "The Qi of the Yangming Stomach meridian descends and governs closing." Baizhi is acrid and warm, inheriting the dry Metal Qi of Yangming which descends, thus treating leukorrhea, blood closure, and genital swelling. Treating alternating cold and heat, wind affecting the head causing tearing: Baizhi is aromatic, with Qi stronger than taste; it not only inherits the dry Metal Qi of Yangming descending but also the Earth Qi of Yangming ascending, thus treating alternating cold and heat, wind affecting the head causing tearing. Earth governs muscles, Metal governs skin. Baizhi obtains the Metal and Earth Qi of Yangming, thus promoting muscle growth. The face is the distribution area of Yangming; when Yang Qi grows, the face shines and the complexion is fresh, thus moistening and brightening the complexion. Baizhi is white and can be made into powder like fat, thus it can be used as facial cream.
