Taste and nature: Salty, cold, toxic. Indications: Pediatric convulsions (Jingxian Chouyin) with twitching, abdominal distension accompanied by alternating chills and fever, and manic Yang syndrome in adults characterized by epilepsy and mania.
(Scarab beetles are found everywhere, divided into two sizes. The small ones have a dark, dull black body and are unsuitable for medicinal use. The large ones have a shiny black body and are named Hu Qianglang. Under the wings on the abdomen, there are small yellow offspring that attach to the mother while flying; they are attracted by light and are suitable for medicinal use. Scarab beetles wrap feces with soil, rolling it into balls. Males drag and females push, placing them in mounds, covering them, and leaving. After several days, young scarabs emerge, indicating reproduction within. Hence, one name is Tuiwan (Rolling Ball), another is Tucheke (Cart Pusher). With deep eyes and high noses, resembling Qianghu people, carrying black armor like warriors, hence named Tiejia Jiangjun (Iron-Clad General). Active at night and hidden during the day, hence also called Yeyou Jiangjun (Night-Wandering General).)
The scarab is a beetle originating from ponds and marshes, reproducing by wrapping and rolling soil. Its salty and cold taste indicates that this beetle inherits the Qi transformation of Earth and Water. As a beetle belonging to Metal, Metal can restrain Wind, thus treating pediatric convulsions with twitching. Inheriting Earth Qi, it treats abdominal distension with chills and fever. Inheriting Water Qi, it treats manic Yang syndrome in adult epilepsy.
Taste and nature: Sour, warm, non-toxic. Indications: Qi Long (urinary difficulty/retention), inability to urinate, amenorrhea and blood masses (Xuejia) in women, epilepsy with chills and fever, promoting water passages, and inducing abortion.
(Rufuls are found everywhere, mostly in damp places underground near human dwellings, particularly under pottery vessels and in earth crevices. They resemble silverfish but are slightly larger, gray in color, multi-legged, with raised transverse stripes on their backs. This is the insect referred to as "in the room" in the Book of Songs.)
Rufuls are born sensing Yin and dampness. Their sour and warm taste inherits the transformations of Taiyang Cold Water and Jueyin Wind Wood. When Taiyang Water Qi circulates on the skin and surface, conditions of Qi Long and urinary retention can be treated. When Jueyin Wood Qi ascends and reaches outward, conditions of amenorrhea forming blood masses in women can be treated. Bladder Qi Long manifests internally as inability to urinate and externally as epilepsy with chills and fever. By treating Qi Long, Rufuls also treat the chills and fever associated with epilepsy. Inability to urinate leads to obstructed water passages; by treating urinary retention, Rufuls promote the flow of water passages. Internal closure of foul blood in women forms blood masses. Internal accumulation of new blood forms pregnancy. Therefore, by treating amenorrhea and blood masses in women, Rufuls demonstrate their efficacy in inducing abortion.
