Remove the heart and hairs. If the hairs enter the Lung, they cause coughing.
Pungent and warm to open orifices, suitable for nasal congestion (bi sai) and mental cloudiness/dizziness (hun mao). Clears clear Yang and releases the muscle layer (jie ji), selected for high fever (zhuang re) and aversion to cold (zeng han).
The Lung opens into the nose, and the Stomach meridian circles the nose and ascends. Whenever Middle Qi is insufficient and clear Yang fails to ascend, headache occurs and the nine orifices become obstructed. Xin Yi (Magnolia flower) inherits the Qi of early spring; its taste is thin and dispersing, able to assist the clear Qi in the Stomach to reach the highest peak (head). Thus, all orifices of the head and face are brought under control.
Pungent and aromatic with penetrating movement; contraindicated for deficient persons. Even if there is occasional Wind-Cold invasion causing nasal congestion, it is contraindicated. For headaches due to Blood deficiency and blazing Fire, taking it will worsen the condition.

White color and pungent taste, enters the Hand-Yangming Metal (Large Intestine); warm nature and dense Qi, enters the Foot-Yangming Earth (Stomach); aromatic and ascending, enters the Hand-Taiyin Metal (Lung). The Lung is the younger brother of Geng (Metal) and the son of Wu (Earth); thus, its indications do not depart from these three meridians.
Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica): dryness consumes Yin/Blood, dispersion damages Qi; contraindicated for those with deficient fire. For carbuncles that have already ulcerated, it should be gradually reduced or discontinued.
