[Wu Zhu Yu] (Evodiae Fructus)
Sweet and pungent, warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Stomach Meridian. Ground into fine powder, stir-fried until yellow; those aged for a long time are of better quality.
Strengthens the Spleen and aids digestion; no need to worry about abdominal pain caused by food stagnation. Directs Qi downward and resolves phlegm; relies upon it for treating diarrhea, dysentery, and stomach Qi rebelling upward (Fan Wei). For summerheat colds, using it harmonizes both the exterior and interior. For waist pain due to sprains or trauma, take after soaking in vinegar and warming.
Contraindicated in cases of Spleen Yin deficiency and excessive Stomach fire. Can damage fetal pregnancy.
[Gou Qi Zi] (Lycii Fructus)
Sweet, slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.
Nourishes the Liver to nourish Ying (Nutritive) Qi, strengthens sinews and tendons, and improves vision. Tonifies the Kidney to fill Essence, relieves thirst, and eliminates irritability.
For those with insufficient Essence, tonify with substances of thick flavor; Gou Qi Zi is such a substance. It enables Yin to generate, so that Yin Blood grows naturally. The Liver opens into the eyes; the "Black Water Divine Light" belongs to the Kidney. When both organs are tonified, vision becomes clear.
Gou Qi Zi promotes the free flow of the Large and Small Intestines; therefore, it should not be used in cases of diarrhea.
[Wu Zhu Yu] (Evodiae Fructus)
Pungent, hot in nature, slightly toxic. Enters the Liver, Spleen, and Stomach meridians. Use Polygoni Multiflori Fructus (Liao Shi) as an assistant drug.
Adverse reaction with Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and Huashi (Talcum). Feels Zhiyingshi (Fluorite). Those with open pores are of good quality; soak in salt water, then dry by roasting.
Dries the intestines and stomach, stopping chronic loose stools. Disperses Yin-cold and treats heart and abdominal pain. Uniquely effective in dispelling cold distension; has particular strength in smoothing Liver Qi. Suitable for hernia pain and beriberi (Jiao Qi). Highly effective in opening depression and killing parasites.
Pungent dispersal and drying heat enter exclusively into the Jueyin meridian, thus it can warm the Liver. As for the Spleen and Stomach, its action extends to them secondarily. Dong Yuan said: "When turbid Yin does not descend and Jue Qi rebels upward, leading to severe distension, only Evodia can treat it. However, excessive use damages Yuan Qi." Kou Shi said: "It directs Qi downward most rapidly; taking it will worsen conditions in people with empty intestines. Do not use it for diseases that are not due to Cold-Stagnation. Even if due to Cold-Stagnation, one must weigh deficiency and excess, and match the medicine to the disease for efficacy."
[Mei Zi] (Mume Fructus)
Sour, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Lung, Spleen, Liver, and Large Intestine meridians.
Stops cough and thirst through the function of astringing the Lung. Stops bleeding and diarrhea through the power of securing the intestines. Clears voice, removes phlegm-saliva, calms roundworms, and manages irritability and heat. Removes foul flesh quickly; clears alcohol toxicity to refresh the spirit. Bai Mei (Shuang Mei). For lockjaw, rub the gums to induce salivation, which opens the jaw; for knife or arrow wounds on the skin, grind and apply, and bleeding stops immediately.
Both Wu Mei and Bai Mei work through sour astringency. After the healing of carbuncles, if flesh protrudes, burn Wu Mei and apply externally; half reduces in one day, and it flattens in two days. A truly miraculous prescription. Plum trees grow in spring; wood curves and straightens to produce sourness. Diseases requiring dispersal strictly forbid sour astringents; mistaken consumption causes harm. If teeth become sensitive from overeating plums, chewing walnut meat resolves it.
