Guishibu (Drynariae Rhizoma), as recorded in *Kaibao Bencao* (*Pharmacopoeia of the Kaibao Era*), is indicated for breaking blood stasis, stopping bleeding, and treating fractures. The blood stasis it breaks is that caused by trauma and fractures; the bleeding it stops is also that resulting from such injuries. Injury to the skin is termed "Shangpo" (skin laceration); injury to tendons and vessels is termed "Shangduan" (tendon rupture); injury to bones is termed "Shangzhe" (bone fracture). Guishibu grows parasitically on trees or rocks, mostly in shady places. Its rhizomes have yellowish-red hairs, and its leaves display spots of green, blue, yellow, white, red, and purple, seemingly indicating its efficacy at sites of bone fracture where it regulates the blood vessels. Furthermore, if broken inch by inch, each section regenerates; wherever broken, juice flows out. Its flavor is bitter and warm, thus entering the Kidney channel to strengthen the Kidneys and treat fractures. Moreover, lacking flowers and fruits, its action is focused and undivided.
Li Shi-zhen stated that grinding Guishibu into powder, stuffing it into a pig kidney, roasting it until cooked, and consuming it on an empty stomach can treat chronic diarrhea that suddenly ceases. Its ability to tonify the Kidney cannot be overlooked. Thus, other medical texts...
Huma (Sesamum indicum) has a sweet taste and a distinct aroma, conforming to the virtue of Earth. Its pods stand upright, full of oily fluid without drooping, which is similar to the ascending function of the Spleen. Therefore, it treats internal injury, emaciation due to deficiency, fills the marrow and brain, and tonifies both the Middle Jiao and the Upper Jiao. Its merit lies in increasing fluids; thus, moistening the skin, lubricating joints, darkening hair, and benefiting milk production are all inevitable effects. Chen Shiliang said: initially eating it promotes bowel movements, but long-term consumption leads to constipation. This indicates its power reaches downward while its nature ascends.
In Zhang Zhong-jing's syndrome treated with Mahuang Ren Wan (Cannabis Seed Pill), the Spleen is affected by the excess strength of the Stomach, becoming constrained and unable to relax. Consequently, the Spleen fails to distribute essence to the Lung, and the Lung's descending command is lost. With both the Lung and the Spleen-Stomach system hindered, how can stool descend? Mahuang Ren (Cannabis Seed) is sweet, neutral, smooth, and slippery, possessing gentleness with inner firmness. It enters the Spleen to nourish its Yin fluids and transform dryness. However, since the Spleen is constrained, the internal hardness is evident. Mahuang Ren can expand but not break through; Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) is the Qi-moving herb within the Spleen that breaks blood stasis. Used together, the Spleen's constraint may be relieved. Since Pi Yue (Spleen Constraint) stems from Wei Qiang (Stomach Excess), treating the Spleen must involve treating the Stomach. The Stomach does not only descend; it relies on the Lung, so the Lung must also be considered. Hence, Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), and Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) are added to attack the Stomach, and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen) to suppress the Lung. The disease originates in the Stomach but is named after Spleen Constraint because this is Taiyang-Yangming disease, not Zheng Yang-Ming disease. Due to the concurrent Taiyang pattern, urination is frequent; frequent urination leads to difficult defecation. The treatment method focuses on raising Spleen Yin and transforming dryness. Once dryness is removed, the Taiyang pattern heals itself without specific treatment, making Mahuang Ren the key herb. For Yangming Fu-organ diseases, Chengqi Tang formulas are indispensable; thus, the Dahuang, Zhishi, and Houpo from Xiao Chengqi Tang (Minor Order the Qi Decoction) are used but in reduced dosages.
When used in Fumai Tang (Decoction to Restore the Pulse), it assists Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus) to unblock Yang, and assists Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) to benefit Yin. Compared to later methods of extracting juice to make porridge for treating wind patterns or strangury, the common principle is always moistening dryness, resolving obstruction, and combining gentleness with firmness.
