[Odor and Flavor]
Slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. It possesses pure yang properties and enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian (Heart Meridian of Hand-Shaoyin).
[Indications]
It promotes blood circulation and relieves pain. It treats wind-water toxic swelling, urticaria with itching and toxicity, cholera, and zhong-e (sudden acute illness caused by inhaling foul qi). It expels evil qi, supports the expulsion of toxins while protecting the heart, invigorates blood, and relaxes sinews. It is used for difficult labor in women and traumatic injuries. Since frankincense has a pungent and penetrating aroma that enters the Heart Meridian, it is employed in Neituo Huxin San (Internal Support to Protect the Heart Powder) to penetrate deeply into the abscess, allowing toxic pathogens to exit from the exterior and preventing them from attacking inward.
[Odor and Flavor]
Sweet in taste, warm in nature, non-toxic. (After harvesting, it should not be smelled with the nose, as it contains tiny white insects invisible to the naked eye; if these enter the human nose, they are called "chong sang" (worm palate), and the material becomes unfit for medicinal use.)
[Indications]
It generates essence and replenishes marrow, nourishes blood, and benefits yang. It strengthens sinews and bones. It treats cold deficiency of the kidneys and lower back in men, weakness in the feet and knees, nocturnal emissions or wet dreams involving sexual intercourse, and spontaneous seminal emission. It treats metrorrhagia and leukorrhea (red and white vaginal discharge) in women. It addresses various deficiency syndromes, deafness, dim vision, vertigo, and deficiency-type dysentery. A Daoist priest at a market in Shu sold Banlong Wan (Banyuan Pill), also known as Rongzhu Dan (Velvet Pearl Elixir). He sang loudly while drunk: "When the Weilu [gate at the base of the spine] cannot hold back the ocean's depletion, even the Nine-Turn Spiritual Elixir is spoken of lightly. Only the pearl on top of the Banyuan can repair the deficiency below the Yutang [chest]." This formula likely utilizes Lurong (Deer Antler Velvet), Lu Jiao Jiao (Deer Antler Glue), and Lu Jiao Shuang (Deer Antler Frost).
[Odor and Flavor]
Pungent in taste, slightly hot in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications]
It treats toxic wind affecting sinews and bones, causing spasms, stiffness, and inability to flex or extend, as well as migrating pain. It treats malignant sores, scrofula (tuberculous lymphadenitis), and dog bite poisoning. Decoction for bathing newborn infants wards off evil qi, removes sores, scabies, convulsions, and gui zhu (ghostly infections/epidemic diseases), ensuring the child grows up healthy. Tiger bone is generally usable. For warding off evil infections, treating convulsions, warm malaria, carbuncles, and head wind, the tiger skull bone should be used. For treating wind affecting the waist and back, the tiger vertebral bone should be used. For treating wind affecting the hands and feet, the tiger tibial bone should be used. This follows the principle of "each using its own kind." However, since the tendons, joints, strength, and energy of the tiger are concentrated in the forelimbs, the tibial bone is considered superior.
(When processing tiger bone, remove the meat and cartilage attachments. Soak in vinegar overnight, bake until dry, and scrape off the outer skin resembling chestnut shell with a knife until clean before use. This prevents injury to the lungs and avoids causing upper qi rebellion.)
[Odor and Flavor]
Pungent in taste, greatly warm in nature, non-toxic. It is yang in nature and floating in action. It enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. However, its pungent and hot nature tends to dissipate qi and can stir fire in the Spleen and Lung. Overuse may cause visual blurring.
[Indications]
It warms the middle jiao, directs rebellious qi downward, tonifies the waist and legs, eliminates fishy odors, aids digestion, and dispels stomach cold, yin hernia, and pi masses. It treats cold-type cholera, heart pain, blood stasis pain, watery diarrhea, deficiency dysentery, vomiting, acid regurgitation, and postpartum diarrhea/dysentery. It works well when combined with Asarum (Awei). When combined with Chebulae Fructus (Hezi), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guixin), and Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), it is highly effective for treating cold deficiency of the zang-fu organs and borborygmus. It treats headache, sinusitis (bi yuan), and toothache. However, Bi Bo primarily acts on the intestines and stomach; it is suitable for cases of vomiting and abdominal fullness/pain caused by cold qi. Excessive consumption depletes true qi, leading to intestinal emptiness and a sensation of heaviness/prolapse in the lower body.
