(Root, stem, flower, and leaf.)
[Flavor and Properties]
Slightly bitter and slightly sweet. The root, stem, flower, and leaf can all be used as medicine together. White flowers enter the Qi level (Qi Fen), while purple flowers enter the Blood level (Xue Fen).
[Indications]
Brightens the eyes and benefits essence (Jing). Regulates menstruation and facilitates childbirth. Treats swelling, toxins, sores, and ulcers. Treats fetal leakage (vaginal bleeding during pregnancy) and difficult labor. Treats retained placenta. However, the root, stem, flower, and leaf are specifically for promoting blood circulation, whereas the fruit promotes blood circulation while also having a tonifying effect.
(When used in pills or powders, calcine over fire, quench with vinegar seven times, grind into powder, process by water flotation, dry, and use.)
[Flavor and Properties]
Sweet in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. It is a herb that enters the Foot-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian blood levels.
[Indications]
Treats cough and rebellious Qi in the heart and abdomen, and pathogenic factors. Tonifies deficiencies. For women whose uterus is affected by wind-cold leading to infertility, resulting in no children for ten years. Long-term consumption warms the middle jiao, lightens the body, and prolongs life.
Treats rebellious Qi, heart and abdominal pain. Treats cold-heat pathogenic factors and stagnant Qi. Tonifies deficiency of Heart Qi. Calms palpitations and fright. Anchors the soul (Hun and Po). Fills the lower jiao. Stops thirst (Xiao Ke). Removes chronic cold from the stomach. Disperses carbuncles and swelling. Makes the complexion lustrous. Nourishes Lung Qi. Treats convulsions, epilepsy, and suppurating wounds. Zi Shiying (Psilomelane) suppresses the heart and calms the mind from above; its heaviness removes timidity. From below, it benefits the liver; its moisture removes dryness. The Heart generates blood, and the Liver stores blood. Its nature is warm and tonifying. Therefore, it is suitable for those with unsettled Heart spirit, insufficient Liver blood, and women with empty-cold in the Sea of Blood (Chong and Ren meridians) leading to infertility. *Bie Lu* states it tonifies Heart Qi, and *Zhen Quan* states it nourishes the Lung; these views confuse the distinctions between Qi and Yang, Blood and Yin, Ying and Wei. Only the indications mentioned in *Ben Jing* truly accord with this principle.
Incompatible with (Wei): Bian Qing (Blue Orpiment), Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root).
Repelled by (E): Gui Jia (Tortoise Shell), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome).
(When used, bake on a new tile until fragrant, remove the shell, take the kernel, crush, and use.)
[Flavor and Properties]
Bitter in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Ju He (Tangerine Seed) has the same function as Qing Pi (Green Tangerine Peel) and enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Therefore, it treats diseases located below, such as lower back pain and hernia. This is not merely based on its resemblance to a seed. In *He Ji Ju Fang*, it is used to treat various hernias and internal ulceration causing testicular swelling and pendulousness, hardness like stone, or swelling leading to ulceration. Ju He Wan (Tangerine Seed Pill) uses it effectively.
[Flavor and Properties]
Salty and astringent in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Treats Spleen deficiency diarrhea and dysentery. Stops frequent urination. Astringes Essence (Jing). Long-term consumption makes one resistant to cold and lightens the body. It also treats seminal emission and leakage. This utilizes its warm and astringent properties. People nowadays wait until they are fully red and ripe, extract the juice, and boil it into paste. The taste becomes sweet, completely losing the astringent flavor and entirely destroying its natural nature. This is a major error. One should only take them when half-yellow, dry them, pound them into powder, and use them. If taken without cause to satisfy lustful desires, it is inadvisable. However, if taken by those with insecure Essence (Jing), what harm could there be?
