[Flavor and Nature]
Pungent, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
[Indications]
Evil qi within the five zang organs. Expels Taenia solium (pork tapeworm). Disperses wheezing in the intestines. Primarily treats accumulated cold qi. Heart and abdominal fixed masses and pain. Treats wind-deficiency syndrome of the uterus in women.
Pediatric malnutrition diarrhea and cold dysentery.
[Flavor and Nature]
Pungent, slightly warm, non-toxic. Capable of ascending and descending, belongs to Yang. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian.
[Indications]
Wind-water toxic swelling. Removes evil qi. Stops cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea. Stomach and spleen vomiting and regurgitation. Warms the middle jiao and promotes free flow of qi. Upper jiao stagnation heat. Bad breath after drinking alcohol. All are treated by decocting with scallion water.
[Flavor and Nature]
Pungent, slightly warm, non-toxic. Belongs to Metal and Water. Possesses the efficacy of penetrating from top to bottom.
[Indications]
Resolves summerheat and promotes urination. Also very effective for treating water retention. When the Lung receives it, its clearing and transforming functions operate. However, for those who do not regulate their diet or engage in hard labor, if they suffer from summerheat injury leading to high fever, extreme thirst, profuse sweating like rain, restlessness, panting, or diarrhea/vomiting, one must tonify primordial qi to descend fire; one should not indiscriminately use scallions as this would further deplete the exterior. Only when cooling off in summer and consuming cold drinks causes yang qi to be suppressed by yin pathogens, resulting in headache, fever, aversion to cold, restlessness, thirst, vomiting, diarrhea, or cholera, is it appropriate to use scallions to vent yang qi, disperse water, and harmonize the spleen. Laypeople use it as a substitute for tea, claiming it resolves summerheat; this is a serious error. Furthermore, its nature is warm and should not be drunk hot, as this may cause vomiting and regurgitation.
[Flavor and Nature]
Pungent, neutral in nature. Leaves are warm, roots and bulbs are neutral; all are non-toxic. Ascending and Yang. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian.
[Indications]
Disperses to unblock yang qi throughout the upper and lower body. Therefore, *Huoren Shu* (Book of Life) treats severe headache due to Cold Damage using Decoction of Scallion Bulb with Roots as the main formula. Zhang Zhongjing treats Shaoyin disease with clear grain diarrhea, interior cold with exterior heat, cold limbs, and faint pulse, using Bai Tong Tang (White Connecting Decoction) as the main formula, which contains scallion bulb inside. If the complexion is red, Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) is used with added scallion bulb. If there is abdominal pain, remove the scallion bulb. The general principle is that the Kidney dislikes dryness, so pungent foods should be eaten urgently to moisten it. The pungent-warm nature of scallion bulb is used to unblock yang qi. Additionally, blowing salt into the urethra via a scallion tube treats urinary retention and critical conditions like bladder torsion. However, white indicates cold and green indicates heat; green scallions must not be used in Cold Damage decoctions. Eating raw scallions in spring causes migratory wind (urticaria) on the face. Eating raw scallions with honey causes diarrhea. Eating roasted scallions with honey obstructs qi and can be fatal. Eating raw scallions with dates causes illness. Eating scallions with dog meat or pheasant meat causes blood diseases.
