(Xiangxun) Sweet and neutral in flavor. Enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Its function is specifically to break blood stasis and treat wind disorders. Songxun (Pine Mushroom) treats uncontrollable turbid urination.
(Tujun/Dizhun) Sweet and cold in flavor. Enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Its function is specifically to benefit the stomach and intestines, regulate qi, and resolve phlegm. Tujun, also known as Dizhun, is toxic. When burned and applied externally, it is excellent for treating sores and scabies.
(Jijun) Sweet and neutral in flavor. Enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Its function is specifically to benefit the stomach. It is miraculous in treating hemorrhoids. Also known as Jijun. Those produced in the sandy lands of Yunnan are superior to those from other places. Those produced in Guangxi are called Leijun.
(Jingmi) Sweet and neutral in flavor. Enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian, Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, and Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its function is specifically to harmonize the stomach and tonify the middle jiao. When used with Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) or Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), the purpose is to retain the medicinal action in the middle jiao. Jingmi from the north, Baijingmi (White Japonica Rice), and Chenjingmi (Aged Japonica Rice) are cooling. Chijingmi (Red Japonica Rice) and Xinjingmi (New Japonica Rice) are heating. Nanjingmi (Southern Japonica Rice) is warm. There are three harvests: early, mid, and late. The late harvest obtains more Metal Qi, making it particularly effective at clearing heat. If a person habitually eats raw rice grains for a long time, it may lead to Jia accumulation (abdominal masses); treating it with Jishibai (Chicken Droppings White) will result in recovery. Mitan (Rice Wash Water) was anciently named Mishen. The second washing water is clear and usable; it clears heat, relieves thirst and restlessness, promotes urination, and cools blood.
(Cangmi) Salty in flavor. Enters the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Its function is specifically to tonify the middle and augment qi. Paired with Renshen (Ginseng Radix), it treats spleen deficiency diarrhea. Paired with Chenxiang (Aquilaria Lignum), it treats gastric regurgitation and dysphagia. For all types of malignant sores where hundred medicines fail, burning Chen Cangmi (Stored Granary Rice) to ash and mixing it with Mayou (Sesame Oil) for topical application will result in recovery.
(Shumi) Pungent and sweet in flavor. Enters the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its function is specifically to treat Geqi (diaphragmatic qi stagnation) and dysphagia. Paired with Renshen (Ginseng Radix) and Shilian (Nelumbinis Semen), it treats throat discomfort.
(Nuomi) Sweet and warm in flavor. Enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian, Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, and Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its function is specifically to tonify spleen and lung deficiency-cold, firm the stool, reduce urination, stop spontaneous sweating, and promote the eruption of Dou Chuang (Smallpox). Mixed with Longgu (Fossilized Bones) and Muli (Concha Ostreae) as powder for dusting is effective for stopping sweat. However, its nature is sticky and cloying; patients and children should avoid it.
(Shumi/Shumi variant context implies similar grain properties often grouped in ancient texts, here likely referring to a specific glutinous or millet type distinct from Nuomi but sharing meridian entry): Sweet and warm in flavor. Enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian, Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, and Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its function is specifically to open the appetite and awaken the spleen, direct qi downward and harmonize the middle, digest food and resolve accumulations. It should be stir-fried before use. Paired with Sharen (Amomi Fructus) and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), it promotes appetite. Women who consume it can cease lactation.
(Yitang) Sweet and warm in flavor. Enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian, Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, and Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. Its function is specifically to tonify the middle and augment qi, strengthen the spleen and resolve phlegm, moisten the lungs and stop cough. Contraindicated in cases of fullness in the middle, vomiting/reversal, alcohol-induced diseases, and gingival caries. Particularly contraindicated in kidney diseases. If a rice awn is accidentally swallowed, frequent consumption of Yitang (Maltose) will result in recovery. Note: Yitang is used to establish the middle jiao; paired with Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), it yields excellent results.
