Taste is sweet and bitter, nature is slightly warm, non-toxic. It disperses blood, relieves pain, removes stasis, and reduces swelling. It treats all types of hematemesis (vomiting blood), epistaxis (nosebleed), bloody dysentery, and metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding). It is an essential medicine for treating metal weapon wounds and cane injuries.
It grows in the deep mountains of Fan Dong (ethnic minority areas) in various prefectures such as Nandan, Guangxi. The root is yellow-black; those that are clustered resemble Baiji (Bletilla striata); the long ones resemble aged dried Rehmannia root, with nodes. If powdered Huanglian is mixed into pig's blood and the blood turns into water, it is genuine. Recently, a type of herb has been circulated: its seedling is three to four chi high, leaves resemble Chrysanthemum mugai but are stronger and denser, with bifid tips. The stem has red ridges, and in summer and autumn, small flowers like golden threads appear, which are lovely. The root is as large as Arctii Fructus (Niu Bang Zi), unlike the one from the south. It is very effective for treating metal wounds and all kinds of blood diseases, claimed to be Sanqi (Notoginseng), but its identity is unknown.
For hematemesis and epistaxis, take the powder with rice soup. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For bloody dysentery, take the powder with rice wash water. (No. 2.)
For blood in stool, take the powder with white wine. (No. 3.)
For metrorrhagia. Same as above. (No. 4.)
For red eye, grind into juice and apply around the eyes. (No. 5.)
For excessive postpartum blood loss, take the powder with rice soup. (No. 6.)
For nameless carbuncles and swellings, grind with vinegar and apply; if ulcerated, sprinkle dry powder. (No. 7.)
For tiger or snake bites, take three qian of powder with rice drink, and chew and apply to the wound. (No. 8.)
Remove clean hairs, soak in浆水 (fermented rice water) and bake before use. Raw use enters the Heart meridian; vinegar-processed enters the Liver and Gallbladder meridians; wine-processed moves upward. Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Ossis Cruris), and Lishi (Petroserpenti Herba) act as guides. It is incompatible with Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Xianpi (Akebiae Caulis), Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos), and Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus). It fears Donghua (Adenophorae Radix) and Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix). It overcomes Wutou (Aconiti Radix) and resolves Bidou toxicity. Avoid pork; dislike cold water.
Taste is extremely bitter, nature is extremely cold, non-toxic. It is a drug for the Hand-Shaoyin Heart meridian. It clears the Heart, reduces fever, drains fire, eliminates irritability, calms the Liver, cools blood, relieves thirst, and stops sweating. It thickens the intestines and stomach, stops diarrhea and dysentery, opens Fuliang (subcutaneous mass) and drains fullness, resolves toxins of carbuncles, ulcers, sores, and scabies, and reduces eye pain and heat from Shanghan (Cold Damage). Do not use for deficiency-cold. Use urgently for red tongue coating. Contraindicated after childbirth.
It grows in the valleys of Wuyang River and on the sunny slopes of Mount Tai in Shu Commandery. Harvested in the second and eighth lunar months. Su Song's "Tu Jing" states: Now there are also varieties in Jiang, Hu, Jing, and Kui prefectures, but those from Xuancheng, nine-joint, hard, heavy, and ringing when struck, are superior. Those from Shi and Qian are next best, followed by those from Dongyang, Shizhou, and Chuzhou. Seedlings are about one chi high, leaves resemble sweet chrysanthemum, bloom yellow flowers in April, bear fruit resembling celery seeds in June, yellow in color. The seedlings do not wither in winter. Late Han materia medica only took the fat and hard ones from Shu as superior; Tang dynasty preferred those from Lizhou; now those from Yazhou and Meizhou are considered good. The rise and fall of drugs vary so much.
